I've always assumed that is what is happening, that he's accepting his journey to the "other side". But apparently there are other interpretations of it.

I love this movie even though it makes me weepy as hell every single time I hear "Hey Dad, you wanna have a catch?".

That's what I always thought.

ETA: what are the other interpretations?

I read one that was that Mann was dead the whole time (like Moonlight) but I have a hard time going with that given the interactions with him throughout the movie.

Another is that he's not dying, but instead was destined to write about baseball again like he enjoyed so long ago. And that like the ever expanding group of people who can see the players, is an example of someone living who will now get "access".

He came back after the last Rangers night game in old Arlington Stadium. I was there. I saw it. The Royals played them in that last series.

After that last night game, the lights went out, one pole at a time. Then a spotlight focused on Terrance Mann as he repeated the, "They will come" speech. Then some of the old players came out onto the field. It was a life changing moment.

I went through the whole not wanting to throw with my dad thing as a teenager. Didn't want to do anything with either of my parents for years. Thought I was too cool to be seen with them or something. Glad we all lived long enough for me to grow up and realize they were just people too. Love spending time with them now.

I don't think he was dead. With Moonlight and the players, Ray and his wife knew they were dead. Mann lived in Boston. The movie was pretty clear in who was living and who wasn't.

The second option is possible.
But man disintegrated into the corn!

I still have a hard time watching that movie since my pops passed. The ending is impossible for me to get through.
