Yeah, you're right. The jaded internet posters that are spoiled by some of the best TV in history lately start acting like Dexter was written by ScyFy movie writers this season. It was not a good, or even average, season compared to some of the other brilliant shows out there, but let's not act like it was the crappiest thing we've ever seen on TV either. And, no, you straight didn't get it if you are putting absolutely zero faith in the writers for such a popular show to have at the bare minimum a vision of how the last season of the show should flow.

What was odd for me was the threat of Dexter being caught was always such an important part of the show and all suspense of that was completely removed this season. It wasn't even an afterthought.

Didn't say the writers didn't have a vision or an intended direction. It's just that said writers weren't good as was their vision and final product.

No man. I think you may be trying way too hard to make more out of it than what it was. The quality of the writing was terrible long before the finale.

I've racked my brain for every source of possible symbolism. I can connect far away dots.

There is nothing in the episode with any symbolism or plot that makes sense in this show's universe. Dexter's crimes at their core is about taking responsibility for your actions. He chooses no responsibility by abandoning his family. "Forgets" his past life. Now is living a life of solitude as a lumberjack.

This show is stupid and whoever was part of this writing team deserves to not be allowed to write for a major drama for the next 10 years.

The whole series other than being about a brother and a sister was dexter trying to have feelings

Once he got them, he didnt want them

I actually think he did take responsibility

Everyone he was ever involved with died. He didnt what that fate for Harrison.

I got the part where he said all he wanted before was to be able to feel like others did, but once Deb's prognosis was revealed now he for once actually felt all those emotions one feels when grieving.

And him killing Saxson now wasn't about fueling his "need" to kill....it was more of an act of someone seeking revenge.

Like others said, I think we would have been more satisfied with either Dexter dying or being caught.

Also, so no one is wondering what happened to Harrison? Dexter's friends in Miami just think he was on the boat with Dexter?

Maybe the worst series finale I've ever personally seen, and I used to absolutely love dexter.

Dexter only now realizes this but he is compelled to kill so the only recourse to protect those he loves is to either die or live alone

They spent the entire season pointing out that he no longer felt compelled to kill (culminating with him leaving Saxon on the table for Deb to arrest) only to make it out like he can't control himself and must isolate himself?

I've read every review and the one with the producers.

According to the producers, it was meant as a self-imposed prison with no contact. Stripped of his inner voice and human contact.

My problem with this is how Dexter gets to dictate his own fate and impose his own punishment. If he wants to go to prison, go to actual prison.

I didn't see that as why he isolated himself. He realized all the actions he's made in the past ultimately ended up hurting everyone he loved. Even if he didn't kill again, he felt like anyone close to him would end up hurt.

We have irrefutable proof that the producers are idiots. I lend no credence to their opinions.

And there's the problem right there.

When the show started, Dexter was a sociopath who had mastered faking the emotions that everyday people displayed because it was necessary to maintain his cover.

He even faked being in love with Rita and married her to maintain that cover.

This show started falling apart when Dexter had a kid and started becoming "more human".

This show died when Dexter's "Lizard Brain" died.

Last night was a farce that I spent all season waiting for just so I could get it over with.

Dexter dictated every event in the show, why would he not dictate his own punishment?

Yep, that's the way I see it. Sure for 1 season Dexter deluded himself into thinking that he could live a normal life but anyone who has followed the show can see that such an implausible reality could never be realized. Any serial killer has a inherent nature that is not easily suppressed and reconciled. That fact that Dexter's father did not reappear in the last scene, suggests that Dexter no longer needs the code and will not continue life as a serial killer but Dexter realizes that his past would likely catch up with him at some point and endanger those he loves. His only viable option was to sever all ties to his former life and live a miserable existence yet hoping that Hannah and his son can find happiness.

Dexter was ruined by Showtime milking every dollar out of it. Even the replacement writers wanted season 7 to be the last.

Perfect ending would have been dex dying. Deb getting Harrison and then seeing he had the dark passenger.

Leaving the audience to wonder if she will teach him the code

I wouldn't have minded this. I think the reason I'm so underwhelmed by this ending is because I saw everything coming. I was just like waiting to be shocked. Really hoped that Saxon and Dex collided in the hospital for some kind of fight scene, I'll admit that was an epic face off if only for a moment.

I wouldn't have minded it either. I didn't want Deb to die. Would rather Dexter die than her.

I know everyone loved to hate Deb but I was always rooting for her. Poor thing, looked like she was finally gonna have some happiness then bam.
