The only nagging thing is what, then, did Deb mean when she said to Dexter something along the lines of "you must be glad this whole thing is finally over"? Why did she think the barrel girls case would affect Dex that much?

Methinks you may be on to something.

I think the writing staff has gotten very cheap and started to "cheat" to throw the audience off. For instance, Deb made the remark about "you must be glad this whole thing is over", but they showed ZERO reaction from Dexter beyond the ordinary.

But the one that pisses me off the most is him throwing the laptop in the water right by the van. Just really cheap, because they can bring that back anytime they want to.

I do think they fudged a little bit this season. Everything was just too neat.

Actually, this one didn't bother me too much because Dexter is so skilled at acting and hiding emotions when it comes to Deb.

Oh come on. I'm talking about narration. If that was supposed to have been relevant, then the music would have changed and he would have made a narrative comment.

If Deb "knows" about Dexter being a killer at this point then it is purely subconscious IMHO. It's too important of a reveal for her to acknowledge it with just a "wink and a nod"...Dexter books be damned (the TV show is not even really following the books anymore from what I've been told).

For the record, I only suggested that Deb knows or strongly suspects it was Dex and Lumen behind the visqueen.

This.

I think Deb eventually finds out and maybe puts it all together using of these subconcious notions of Dex being the killer. Like you said though, it is far too important to be a small sidenot like some of you think it is. I don't think at any point in this series has she thougth "What if Dexter is the killer".

But Dexter killed Liddy in a moment of passion, and signs pointed to Quinn. There was blood on Quinn's shoe, his name on surveillance registry, the record of calls between him and Liddy. In the finale, Quinn is dramatically called out and briefly put behind bars—a genuine and thrilling leap in the plot, it seemed. Because would he have to go public with the Dexter investigation? With the suspicion that Dexter may have killed Liddy? Yet he's loose by end of the episode, thanks to ... Dexter's blood work? Uh, wait. What? Yes, the drop of blood was suspicious but hardly the cops' only black mark against Quinn and likely not the last lead in Liddy's murder. If Quinn were truly investigated, the police would have found Liddy's photos of Dexter and Lumen in Quinn's apartment. They likely would have also found additional surveillance records in Liddy's place. Clearing Quinn on account of that one blood drop was a pat fix, a flirtation with consequence but too bashful to explore real trouble.

Look, I had lunch today with a friend who also watches the show. We've both seen and analyzed lots of films and tv series. The entire premise of Dexter is sort of outlandish. Dude would have been dead or in jail long ago in real life. But the show is enjoyable nonetheless for the characters and the jeopardy.

Why didnt Dexter change up the body dumping after the scuba diver found the pile of bodies last time that they pinned on Doaks or Moser? HUH

Dexter hypnotized Miami Metro Homicide and they forgot about the boat thingy.

he did, he went from dumping them in the bay to dumping them in the gulf stream

now granted, it looked like he might have gone back to his old ways this year but he had changed his dumping habits after the bay harbor butcher deal

that line that deb said was very innocent and she could have no way of knowing that Dexter was in any way involved

descent finale but I was hoping for more... really I wish they would have expanded on a few things, maybe add like 5-10 minutes, maybe Dexter and Quinn have a conversation more than "thanks, just doing my job"

He references the use of the gulfstream constantly.

Anything can happen, and a fresh start may be exactly what the upcoming season needs ... especially if the show will stop pulling punches and tighten loose ends. The arc of Lumen was largely a success—tender, generally well acted, resonant, and appropriate to our serial killer's larger evolution. It's the rest of Dexter that needs to follow through.

Regarding the fresh start, I agree. However, someone mentioned that in a preview for the next season, the murders of Liddy/Chase are still being investigated. Hopefully, those investigations are resolved in the early episodes so that there's some sort of freshness.

I would love to see Michael Emerson aka Benjamin Linus play a serial killer.

I think she was alluding to herself as much as Quinn.
i read your comment on the last page and i think you are accurate.

Deb;s comment to dex about being relieved, raised an eyebrow for me too, but it really didnt occur to be that deb could know until JerseyTiger pointed it out in the thread.

I know people thought the finale was underwhelming compared to the roller coaster for the season, but I think there are plenty of loose ends to bring us into next season.

Anyone know if next season is the last?
