Its hard to believe it was only a 17 year gap from the setting of the movie and when it was made. If a movie were made today and set in 2001 it wouldn't work like dazed and confused did.

2001 doesn't feel like a different era.

The 80's obliterated the 70's.

By the 1990's the 70's felt like a lifetime ago. Like the 50's.

Exactly. 2001 does not feel like a different era, that sums it up.

It's more of a fantasy than reality, cramming the late 70's and early 80's college experience into one weekend on film. But it does capture what it was like to be in college and go from disco to cowboy to punk/new wave in that short time frame.

It helped that the 70s was a fairly discernible decade with regard to fashion, hairstyles, decor, etc.

The 80s and 90s had that to a degree.

If it were made about 2001, fashion and music wouldn’t really be any different than today and it would pretty much be contrasting what existed that summer vs the changes coming that year between 911 and Enron.

His most underrated movie is Slacker which came out before Dazed and Confused...and is the epitome of Independant film-making back when that mean't something.

Just realized the other night that Smokey and the Bandit takes place during the Summer of '76, same as Dazed and Confused. I kinda like the idea that those two storylines occur in the same timeline.

I was 13 in 79. An old 13 that was raising himself . I relate to Dazed and Confused so much. I loved the 70s . It’s interesting to say the 80s obliterated the 70s . It’s weird I get that. By 1982 it was another age.

It feels like pop culture has stalled for a long time for some reason. The decades from the 50's to the 90's all feel very distinct while the last 20 years really don't. I've also considered that this is possibly because I'm growing older and maybe the younger people feel that same distinction between the last two decades. I don't think so though. The styles between the 50's and the 90's changed radically by decade.

It's not because you're older.

The 90's were a direct rebuttal to the 80's.

2000's had no rebuttal and everything sort of became more generic. 90's sort of ushered that in.

2000's and 2010's is the same era - just tech bubble. Same TV, shite we still talk about The Wire and Sopranos non-stop. There has been no cultural shift from late 90's to now.

What's different from the late 90's?

It's still Kardashians, American Idol, Twitter same ol' shite.

Do you understand how drastically different the 80's were from the 70's?

Now it's just same ol' same ol' - Oh a new iphone update, that's about the biggest cultural shift since the 2000s.

I just googled clothes from the early 2000's and you could wear most of the stuff today without turning any heads.

Now imagine walking down the street like this in the 90's:
