Part of the reason the entire movie got made was because half of Hollywood was impressed by the Joe Friday impersonation he did at parties and on sets to entertain others. He's underrated because he was in Murray's wake, never considered a franchise actor and he focused on comedy. But, of that era, it's hard to find a better "utility" player, in that he could write/revise dialogue (or entire scripts), do impersonations, play the key support role or even co-lead. He elevated most of the pictures he was in.
