According to Costner, the director knew Jackson was left-handed but thought the movie was not about him. CGI was not yet available, but I don't think it would have been difficult to just make a uniform with the lettering and number reversed and simply flip the film for that scene.
The 25th anniversary cast reunion at the site is shown from time to time on MLB Network. Thousands turned out to watch a screening of the film and "have a catch". Costner himself tossed balls with a bunch of men, and remarked that each took a turn and then politely stepped aside to allow others to have the opportunity.
