What was the meaning to this? There just seemed like it was trying to get at something.. Was it just leading to how he is constantly reminded how lucky he is to be alive? That cant be all right?

The guy who got struck by lightning was weird,I didn't really figure out what they were trying to get at by showing that guy.

Went see it tonight and I was impressed. The lightning guy was funny as hell. It was a drama but all the comical moments just made it more enjoyable. I too might buy it when it comes out.

Aside from the Louisiana Syndrome in which all people from Louisiana hate any portrayal of the state in pop culture, what is people’s big deal with Katrina? It was simply a framing device to tell the story, and it’s not like the hurricane plays a huge role in the movie, it just means the daughter can’t leave and has to spend time listening to the story. And then we get the image of the backwards clock getting washed away.

From all of the bitching, I thought Katrina was going to play a major role in the story. It didn’t.

I like the Katrina tie-in. Aside from what others have said, I thought it was a not-so-subtle shout out to the city, especially the locals around here. Throughout the entire movie we get a look at how great a place its always been. We see the streetcars, we hear street names only familiar to people from the area etc., it was a really good portrait of New Orleans at its best. And its capped off with Katrina destroying all that at the end.

As a side note, i thought they did a pretty good job using New Orleans accents. Usually in movies N.O. people have an extreme, straw in the mouth, cowboy hat, accent. If not that, then a ridiculous over the top cajun accent. I thought they were pretty good at this. Blanchett's accent seemed to get better and better as her character aged.

I kind of put something about this in an earlier post, but I read in a magazine, that the water flooding at the end and caused the clock to begin working back in time again is a tribute to New Orleans and the ability for rebirth.

Brad Pitt said that is was a must to have that in the movie as a salute to New Orleans and the rebirth of New Orleans. I wouldn't get caught up in the details of the news casts, etc and look at it as a bigger sign of symbolism, etc in the movie.

I am not a huge fan of all of Pitt's politics but I must say he has shown quite a comittment to New Orleans and has given a lot back to the city.

I agree. I also saw enterviews at the premiere where Pitt said the movie was originally set in Baltimore, the Producers said Boston. So, either way, the N.O., Katrina stuff wasnt coincidental or thrown in to fill time.
