John Cho to Star in Netflix's 'Cowboy Bebop' Live-Action Series
quote:
John Cho will topline Cowboy Bebop, Netflix's live-action take on the influential space Western anime, featuring castmembers such as Luke Cage actor Mustafa Shakir, Daniella Pineda (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) and Alex Hassell. Alex Garcia Lopez, who has helmed episodes of Daredevil, Luke Cage and Cloak and Dagger, will direct the first two installments of the 10-episode series. Christopher Yost wrote the first episode.
Cho = Spike
Shakir = Jet
Pineda = Faye
Hassell = Vicious

I like all but Cho.
I never saw Spike as Asian.
I always thought Timothy Olyphant was the best person for that role, but I guess he is too old now.
Cho has to be able to act out Spike’s funny attitude without it being too much.
Hopefully it’s good.
Who will play Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky IV? That’s most important.

Ed: They're waiting to see where the status of gender fluidity is as they get closer to their shoot date (as to insult the smallest number of viewers as possible).

I’m just saying he doesn’t look Japanese.
Many of their shows, especially the futuristic ones, are drawn without clear Asian physical characteristics.
Search on google and you will see that pretty much no one had an Asian playing Spike.
He doesn’t look Asian. I just found it interesting.
Jet is being played by Shakir. Jet is a Japanese creation.
There are some that are clear, like Major from Ghost in the Shell (one of the reasons I thought that the casting choices for that movie were abysmal).

uhhhh what
Joking. The gender of Ed was big question when the show premiered. A character named Ed that acted like a girl. Eventually they came out and referred to Ed as "her" on the show.
The character was intended to be a boy, then they decided they didn't want Faye to be the only girl as a regular and went with Ed as a girl from the start.

It's a cultural thing I've noticed with Chinese and japanese girls at least. The lighter skinned ones I dated all made comments about being able to pass as white in the home country.
So you'll have a guy who looks very western like Spike but with all the trappings of their cultural icons. We like Spike because he's a lovable rogue. But he's basically a stereotypical ronin with his whole story arc.

I don’t think Cho was on anyone’s prediction list.
It is just an interesting choice and not who I would have picked.
Plus, I can’t separate Cho from his role in White Castle and he is the complete opposite of Spike in that show.

On the series, Spike has a slightly yellower tone to his skin, Faye is pink, and Jet is more of a Caucasian tone. Ed is more brown than the rest. It's more evident when they share a frame.

I’ll just admit John Cho was nowhere near who I was picturing.
Maybe he’ll pull it off. I’ll wait and see.
Other choices, I’m fine with.
Edward will make or break it though.
Ein too. He is important.

I swear to God if they have Ein talk. I'm dropping it.

Choreography is never a problem with characters like Spike.
It’s simply the attitude portrayal.
It is why I always pictured Olyphant. He could pull off the funny yet serious tone.

That show was too weird for me.
