Oddball 2017 (2016?) kaiju movie which features Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis.
Seems this movie disappeared before it even came out. I remember seeing trailers for it but then nothing. Never saw any reviews which generally means it was not well received.
Finally, after all these years, I know why. The story is half baked, and every character is garbage..
Which is unfortunate, because lost within all the contrived and depressing nonsense, there was the framework for a pretty good movie. Hell, this could have even been a magical, goofy cult classic.
I don’t know what happened, maybe they ran out of time or money or maybe some writers bailed, and they had to just cobble something together…
And apparently every single day is school day in this one little town.

this is entirely true. I add this, We're the Millers, and Hall Pass as to why i think Jason Sedekis deserved all the awards for Ted Lasso because being a dick seems to be his natural element. I think the ex-boyfriend is the only likeable person.
that being said, i don't hate it. unique, original story. not amazing, nothing to write home about but an OK movie.

It was a festival movie that went basically straight to streaming. It has a high RT/Metacritic rating, so there were reviews.
And it's a movie about addiction, so it wasn't likely to ever garner a big, general audience.

I picked up the vibe on every man in her life trying to tell Anne Hathaway’s character how much a screwup she is and how everything is her fault. A bit too on the nose for my likes. But even so, I think what I dislike most about this movie is failing to be what it could have been instead of what we got.

What do you think it could have been, given the subject matter?

How many magical, goofy cult classics exist with the primary theme being about the destructive power of addiction?

I get that they intentionally set it up like some Hallmark channel storyline, where the hot girl working in the big city runs into a bit of bad luck, comes home and randomly bumps into an old school friend who never left the small town. So obviously, they had to subvert expectations and put a twist on the standard trope. But this went dark and I think needlessly so.
And the dumb 'cute guy'? Total void of a character. Just 'there' for reasons. Bar owner, random friend and ex bf all tossed into the mix with no real story there. It all just felt unfinished.
Oh, and the 'ex' junkie ? WTF did he do to deserve being dumped on? That whole plot twist took me out of the movie. More time should have been spent on the back story and cause for what was happening. But the writers didn't want to do that much work, it seems. When they flashbacked & went into the fenced off property, I almost got Bridge to Terabithia feels, but creepier.
