I'd go with Eastwood just because his best is slightly better than Wayne's. It's extremely close though. Searchers and Liberty Valance aren't far behind TGTBTU and Josey Wales for me.
I would agree with this. Eastwood did some great ones, but Wayne did lots and lots of very good ones. I guess you could kind of deduct a bit from John Wayne because the Alamo was a very expensive "passion project," and it's not all that watchable. Clint inherently knew how to make a movie.

John Wayne movies were a little too corny for me.
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly is a classic.
Even the soundtrack was epic.

I'd go with John Wayne, though I am more likely to sit down and watch an Eastwood western just due to the fact I grew up on those. I got to see the Wayne westerns more when my dad would want to watch them.
I wonder if they'll make more of them... though I seriously doubt an actor or actress will be as synonymous with the genre as Wayne and Eastwood were. I think the closest you get now is either RDJ or Chris Evans being linked to superhero movies.

I love Clint's Western resume, but:
Stagecoach
Fort Apache
She Wore A Yellow Ribbon
The Searchers
Red River
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence
Sons of Katie Elder
McClintock!
Yeah, Wayne churned out a lot of forgettable Westerns, but he had some damned high quality ones as well.

John Wayne shits on Clint Eastwood

Eastwood by a country mile and it's not close for me. Never cared for the Duke.

I've seen all of Clint's westerns multiple times. John Wayne, maybe once apiece. Maybe it's a generational thing, but I prefer Eastwood by a lot.

John Wayne by a mile. I put Stewart/Ford/Douglas in front of Eastwood

I mean it’s pretty simple, those who grew up with Eastwood choose Eastwood and those who grew up with Wayne choose Wayne. I grew up with Eastwood and I fricking love him. But my dad is a huge Duke fan and so I watched all of his movies growing up too, but I choose Eastwood.

I don't think that John Wayne was a fan of Eastwood westerns.
I think something was brewing in the works until High Plains Drifter. Apparently Duke was appalled and that was it.

I like Clint's movies a lot and even the non-Westerns (and he was clearly stronger than John Wayne outside of the Western genre, is a GOAT candidate filmmaker when you look at his entire body of work). Hell, Josey Wales might be my favorite Western.
On the other hand, The Searchers is widely regarded as one of the best films of all time, period (regardless of genre). Stagecoach is up there as well.

Not really. I was born in 70 and grew up with Eastwood being the bigger star. As a little kid, John Wayne was making the kind of movies that I think of when I think of the Old West. Eastwood was making Italian films. Good ones but still...not really the kind of Western I wanted to watch as a kid.

Can we say "John Wayne" anymore? I bet those monuments are being torn down as we speak. These crazy fricks these days.

I grew up with Eastwood but prefer Wayne.
Definitely preferred Eastwood when I was younger but then you get older and watch all the classics of Wayne and the storylines are more attuned to middle age than to twenty-something.
The one movie I did watch a lot of as a kid by Wayne was True Grit because we had it on VHS...and loved it but really at that age Good, Bad and the Ugly was more exciting.

Kind of an unfair comparison because Leone is so much greater than Ford. However, I'm not sure Eastwood ever turned in a performance as good as Wayne's in The Searchers
