During their conversation, Safran explains the casting process behind his 10-year plan with Gunn and discusses how Clayface moved from Flanagan’s hands to Watkins’ and how that ultimately changed the final film. He talks about the movie’s love story, casting a relatively unknown Harries, pushing the boundaries of violence and gore, and releasing a lower-budget horror under the DCU umbrella. Safran also discusses the future possibilities for the universe, including genres they hope to explore, revealing that “nothing’s off the table,” as well as discussing how Clayface introduces fans to the new Gotham City. Finally, he reveals Batman is already operating somewhere in Gotham City during the events of Clayface.
quote:
COLLIDER: When Mike Flanagan first pitched Clayface, what was the moment that convinced you and James this movie needed to happen?
PETER SAFRAN: He had such tremendous passion for it that originated with his obsession with “Feat of Clay,” from the Batman animated series. He just had such passion for it, and he attacked it from a truly character perspective. He had a great story about this character, exploring the idea of how one bad decision can change everything for you, Then, he delivered a first draft that fully delivered on the promise of the pitch.
It's not all Flanagan. The script was changed quite a bit
quote:
So Mike delivers a script, and I know that Hossein Amini did a pass on the script.
SAFRAN: Mike delivered… I think he might have done two drafts on it, and it was really good, and we obviously really wanted him to direct the movie. That was always the intent but as a very highly sought-after filmmaker in both film and television, he had other
We hired James Watkins, who had a terrific pitch for it, whose films we loved, as well. And because it's a filmmaker's medium, we wanted to give him the freedom to explore his vision a little bit, as well, and he brought in Hossein Amini to work with him. The film that you saw is a beautiful amalgamation of those two visions.

Are we supposed to imagine Batman is already operating somewhere in Gotham during the events of Clayface?
SAFRAN: Yes.
How much did you and James Gunn talk about where Batman is, and what Batman is doing during?
SAFRAN: We haven't really talked about what he's doing during the actual events of Clayface. But Batman is there. This is the introduction to the live-action Gotham. We showed a silhouette of Batman in Creature Commandos, so you know he's around, but this is the first step into the world of Gotham for us.

Its the worst kept secret in Hollywood at this point that Brandon Sklenar has been cast as Batman in the DCU

I'd be fine with that. He's got the size for it, like Affleck did.

In Flanagan's own words, in his recent EW feature:
quote:
I haven’t seen [Clayface] yet,” Flanagan tells Entertainment Weekly at San Diego Comic-Con. “That’s James’ movie.”
James Watkins, that is.
quote:
It looks like the movie I think it is,” Flanagan adds, having seen and liked the trailers. “But it’s a weird situation because I turned in the script and it’s like, ‘James [Gunn], make your movie. I’m off to do my thing.’ I’ve never been in this position before, but I’ll probably see it when everybody else sees it.”

Sklenar has been the overwhelming fan choice online for awhile
Reminds me of Bale. Not a super well known actor at the time outside of film circles and was the overwhelming fan cast for Batman

Yep, it's quite a bummer that Flanagan wasn't able to direct it

Current at 77% after 44 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes

Harloff says it's not a great movie at all but he liked it and would watch again
Compared it to an early 90s showtime movie you'd catch at 11 pm like the 1990 punisher movie with dolph lundgren. Compared it to the fly or darkman

That's basically what I'm expecting. Just a fun, decent time at the movies. You probably won't think much about it afterwards but you got your money's worth
