X-Men 3 was bad enough that no one cares.

Spoiling this movie is an act of kindness.

haven't see all of the X-Men movies, so I'm not sure if it was ever explained.

Days of Future Past did one of the greatest things a comic book movie franchise has ever done. They made an entire movie shitting on the most hated movie in the franchise and then retconned it out of existence. I was ecstatic when young Charles looked into the future and saw scenes from X3 then broke down screaming "I don't want your future" then proceeded to ensure that future never happened. That was awesome.

Wolverine Franchise

Theyve done a solid job with the xmen outside of two major misses.

I like DOFP as well but to me it had the much more confusing ending. Why did they show mystique getting Logan rather than Stryker, only to have him shown a captive in the same Stryker facility in the next movie?

Does DoFP stop 3 though?

Its entirely possible he reawoke between 2 and 3.

I found a great way of coping with X-Men continuity:
