re: Breaking Bad vs. The Sopranos

Have watched every episode of both series (obviously still have a few of BB to go) and they're both some of the best to ever hit the screen.
Here's the amazing thing, The Sopranos had the luxury of doing plot development using violence unrestricted...it was on HBO. Language and intense violence, which are a part of any inside look at crime, were there as a tool. Breaking Bad has created that "shock and awe" affect with less to work with.
Lastly, the writing in Breaking Bad seems to be a bit more complex and it handles multiple parallel plots a little better than Sopranos did...IMHO.
Like Speedy said earlier in the thread, watch them both; stuff like this doesn't come around too often.

The show was solid minus the psychologist. I think that they should have cut that woman out of the series all together as she served no purpose. I watched the show for the mob element and not the "human" element. Tony should have been whacked in a bloody St. Valentine's day massacre type ending.

Again, I disagree. Because of doctor-patient confidentiality, the psychiatrists office was the only place Tony could open up about his "other life", linking it with his psychological issues. I can't think of another scenario where that could plausibly happen. Plus it created a mobster-patient contrast that at times bordered on darkly hilarious when you think about it.

Obviously the writers of the show knew what they were doing I just commented on aperfect world scenario for myself. Viewers certainly grew tired of the office scenes and that is why they were limited later on. I think the same thing could have been accomplished by having Tony talk to an old retired made guy or someone else along those lines. At least the conversation would have been more entertaining as it would have left the door open for colorful stories and other possibilities.

Again, in my opinion, then it would have been not much different from any other mob show. I thought the psych angle was one of the fundamental plot themes that made Sopranos unique. Agree to disagree...

For me - the best 4 shows of the current "Golden Age" of cable drama (excluding GoT - which is kind of its own beast, anyway) are:
Sopranos, The Shield, The Wire and Breaking Bad (not necessarily in that order). I've seen every episode of every show. I still have The Shield as best, all time, but that was because the highs were awesome and the first and last episodes were the best pilot/finale of a series, ever. Having said that, The Wire and Sopranos were, slightly better on a consistent basis. Breaking Bad has the potential to be the greatest show of all time, and, it really gets better and better.
I have little doubt that if you like BB, you'll like The Sopranos (and The Shield and The Wire).
