Breaking Bad S4 Episode 13 "Face Off" question

Spoilers for those who haven't gotten this far, and NO SPOILERS for any of season 5 please (starting it tonight).
So I finished up S4 last night and while the season as a whole was the best I've seen yet, one thing bugged me about Gus's death. For a guy so precise, calculated, and is always "one step ahead of you," how did he not notice the bomb on Hector's chair well before going into the room? He even had his dude Victor check the place out before and AFTER he went in the room. While I wasn't expecting the bomb as a viewer (and was an awesome scene), I would think someone as intelligent as Gus would of noticed.
Doesn't take away from the episode, just a thought that bugged me last night when I watched.

i think the point was that he never would have suspected that from Hector considering he was more concerned about the DEA closing in on him and Hector talking to the DEA out of revenge for killing his nephews. Gus simply overlooked it I suppose.

It had to happen somehow. I thought he was really cautious, I mean it was a nursing home. He was more concerned about a wire tap then a bomb.

I think that's the reason he felt safe enough not to question anything.

Only thing that bugged me about that scene was the fact that the explosion literally ripped the door off the hinges and blew it across the hallway, and Gus got out of his seat and walked a few feet
I guess the bomb was powerful enough to blow a door off metal hinges, but not knock Gus out of his chair

hector wasn't a physical threat to gus. that's why they didn't see it coming

I'll be honest, his view towards Hector was different than anything else Gus did in the show. He believed he had Hector beat completely, turned him into a man with no fight.
With everything Hector had done/been through, I also don't think Gus imagined Hector would blow himself up, but a man with nothing left is the most dangerous.
Even the most intelligent and most devious of men get overly confident. Very often they are the ones who make the mistake, not their employees.....

As others have posted Hector wasn't a physical threat. He had no family or friends left that could use him like Walt did. Thus Gus overlooking a bomb threat and focusing on wire tap.

Didn't really think about it that way. I just assumed since Gus was so calculated he would notice the bomb but most likely had his guard down due to Hector being so weak. I guess he sided with Walt cause he had nothing else to live for and knowing his death will also cause Gus's.

quote:yeah. i'm sure the fact that gustavo would visit him just to gloat probably played into that. imagine being tortured but not being able to fight back. although hector hated walter for what he did/tried to do, walt gave him the ability to stand up for himself

Tio was his achilles. After he killed his "companion" he planned the rest of his life how to torture that man. He was getti g to do it and since he thought Tio was talking..it was time to hurry and kill him. And he knew it had to be himself to do it. no matter what. Tyrus checked the room for bugs, not bombs. Gus had one weakness and Walter found it in time. Thanks to Jesse again.
He trusted tyrus when he told him it was all clear so a decently hidden bomb was the last thing on his mind. Not to mention the fact he figured Walt would have stayed far away from the Salamanca family.
When Walt brags he is the man who killed Gus Fring, he's really saying I'm the man who outsmarted Gus Fring.

It was obvious something was gonna happen. Walt came in and talked to Hector for a reason. He had Hector go to the DEA because he knew Gus would have someone watching him. When Gus found out, he knew he would go to the nursing home to talk to him. Walt was clearly setting a trap for Gus.
BTW, Hector trolling the DEA was awesome.

If I'm not mistaken didn't they show Walt hiding behind a wall outside while Gus's dude was checking for wires? I just assumed Walt snuck back in and put the bomb on when he left to tell Gus it was clear

Tyrus probably never left the room. It was already on, he just overlooked it. Wasn't looking for a bomb, was looking for a DEA wire which would have given off a signal.

I'm guessing the bomb was attached to the wheelchair motor and just looked like a part of it.

Plus Gus was a guy who looks you in your eyes. Especially tried to with Hector. Can't remember 100% but Tio's body may have also somewhat shielded Gus' view.
It was all on tyrus to be honest. I think he was former military too, defiantly dropped the ball.

This is correct.
Plus the bomb was small and easily would blend in with the mechanism under the wheelchair. You'd have to be specifically looking there for a bomb to see it. Tyrus was looking for wires.
