At that point, he's basically writing the novelization of the show. No one will care that it's his original work, especially folks that weren't fans before the show.

There's also creative license. If HBO finished the show, does GRRM owe royalties to the show writers if he uses any plot from the show to finish the book?

I don't think he's embarrassed, but I do think he's now in the position where he wants to add in additional surprises/moments to the story, that maybe weren't part of the initial plan, just to keep them coming. Since so many have been figured out, he still wants to have those moments.

And when writing and adding these moments, he'll have to be careful to add those things without making them unnecessary.

One of my favorite things about GRRM is that he spent so much time on a story that turned into nothing (Quentin). Just like real life - everybody is scheming, and a lifetime of work can turn into ashes in seconds. Its also what I find most irritating about him too.

He has no idea how to logistically bring everyone back together, at least not any quicker than he broke them apart. He's spent 5 books expanding the plot, sending the characters all over the world, introducing new characters, but he knows he doesn't have time for 5 books of the same quality to wrap it up. His dilemma is how to do it in two books and not lose the quality and detail that got him here in the first place.

Wheel of Time had the exact same issue, and Robert Jordan died before he could resolve it. Before he died he said he still had enough material for 12 books. Then the replacement writer, Sanderson, just kind of said "frick that, I'll hit salient plot points and I can knock this out in three books.

And those three books were some of the best in the series (at least I've been told, I never finished the series. Couldn't finish the fourth book. First three, especially dragon reborn, were really good).

Anyways, back to Thrones, I understand your point that Martin could have trouble converging the storylines. But it could also be done by middle of book 6 if he wanted to. Dany finds something in herself in the Dothraki sea and boom, resolves to return to Westeros immediatelly, reconvenes in Mereen, meeting Tyrion, Victarion and others along the way, and now they are all back in the fold.

The Others could strike at any goddamn minute and as soon as they do, and the entire realm finds out (and hopefully believes it) then all the Westeros storylines could merge into a battle for survival.

Martin's story won't be this straight forward though (and thank god for it) and it may be the end of Winds before the Others attack and Dany lands in Westeros. But Winds is going to open with two huge battles, each of which is going to pull in storylines, and I already felt like the story was starting to converge in Dance anyways.
