We took full advantage of the marketing for the first one and enjoyed the hell out of it. We went through all of the online stuff that they offered, watched the pre-release special on the old Sci-Fi Channel... it was awesome to finally see the movie and the "shock" ending.

The brilliance of the first movie was that it was different. They took full advantage of using the new technology of the Internet to market the movie as a reality type movie, creating a folklore and tragedy. Remember, this was in the very early days of the Internet. part of the attraction of the movie was curiosity. Some people were able to put themselves in the movie and really enjoyed it and it really freaked some out. As well there were some who were just turned off by the filing style.
In my opinion, it's a movie that should have been left alone. The sequel didn't measure up to the original because it got away from what made it a success. I fear the same for any remake.

It's not a remake but a direct sequel to the original, I'm assuming 2 doesn't exist in this version of the movie?

I was around 20 at the time so yes I remember it like it was yesterday. The movie fricking sucked. No witch, just a bunch of idiots running around with a camera. It was the worst movie I ever laid eyes on. Never Ending Story part 2 had more substance.

Blair Witch was good, but i think Paranormal Activity did it better.

And completely ripped off the genre.God knows how many billions were made off the Blair Witch formula.

Had they made a better movie, they would be the gold standard. They made a shitty movie and now get to watch others benefit.

Second one was a hot steaming pile of penguin shite.
Great link; goes into what Berlinger did when making BW2
The problem was that the director, Joe Berlinger, did something quite different and then the Artisan Entertainment meddled with some editing (they wanted more gore since it was a "horror" movie and the flash-forwards, which ruin any suspense).
The easiest way to give people a new perspective, if they ever watch Blair Witch 2 again, is to point out the importance of a line spoken early on:
quote:
Video never lies. Film does, though.”
Then you can get into the motivation behind their actions which can go 2 ways:
Easy = the blair witch messed with their heads
Difficult = the director wanted to show that they all descended into madness due to a obsession with the Blair Witch and can't accept that they are responsible.

LMAO!It was made on a freakin $28,000 budget in 8 days by freakin film students and movie grossed over $240 million!
Did you not even comprehend what I was saying?
Are you somehow saying that Paranormal Activity somehow "perfected" the genre?Thats even more laughable

Because everyone wanted to see what the fuss was about. It was supposed to be the scariest shite ever. Of course people were going to go see it.
No. Paranormal Activity did what the Blair Witch should have done. instead of showing the weakest aftermath, actually film the gruesome shite going on like people do with their cell phones instead of leaving it up to imagination. The Blair Witch should have been a book instead.
Its my opinion that the movie was the worst I have ever seen. There was nothing to that movie. What did they spend 28k on? Booze? because a cam corder and running through the woods at night didnt cost shite. There was no special effects, no make up, no costumes, NOTHIN!!! 28 thousand that turned into $240 million because of curiosity by us. Excellent for them but I felt it was the worst $7 I ever spent. I dont care what the ratings are on this new movie frick those people.

It was a terrible movie. I got motion sickness lol ( probably had something to do with me having too much extra butter on my huge tub of popcorn to be honest)
It did however accomplish what it wanted to do, as you perfectly laid out. It was a huge success, but because it was a decent movie

To each their own. I thought it was pretty damn good.
