Great, great movie. That and Miracle on 34th St definitely need to be mentioned in this thread.
Of the modern movies, I like Christmas Vacation, Elf, and A Christmas Story

If people were never exposed to IAWL until they were in college, sat down and watched the whole DVD, with no commercials, I truly believe it would be in almost every top 5 list.
It's good. It really is. But it just didn't hold up as well for me growing up as some others have. And I've watched it numerous times growing up, not in the background of gatherings, but actually actively watched it.
The original Miracle on 34th Street is that way for me too. Was great growing up watching it but it just doesn't do it for me anymore.

Die Hard

Why? It came out at Christmas and has the theme and music of Christmas throughout.

Classics:
A Christmas Carol (with Alistair Sims)
It's a Wonderful Life
White Christmas
Modern:
Christmas Story
Elf
Christmas Vacation
Home Alone
I prefer the classics.

It didn't come out at Christmas. It was a summer blockbuster.
The setting is Christmas. I could list off the top of my head about 20 movies that are set at Christmas but no one would consider them Christmas movies.
I don't know when this board decided that Die Hard was a Christmas movie.

Well i may be wrong about the date, but this board is not alone, many people consider it to be a Christmas movie

I know. I'm in the vast minority. I just think to be considered a "Christmas Movie" it has to be more than just the setting. There should be some kind of Christmasey thing happening like family or angels or wishes or something.
And obvioulsy, Christmas movies are released at Christmas.

Already mentioned but A Christmas Story and Christmas Vacation are at the top for me.

I'm with you, Mad -- love that movie! For me, Scrooged would come in 2nd, after Christmas Vacation.

would you consider A Christmas Story "modern"? It did come out 30 years ago.

I'd say anything since 1980 is modern in regards to movies.
I'm willing to lower standards for Christmas movies as far as quality goes because they put you in a good mood and are a part of the season to me.
"Have you checked our shitters"?

Christmas Story and Miracle on 34th Street (Maureen O'Hara/Natalie Wood) version are favorites but...
Scrooged with Bill Murray is underrated.
