Conclave leads the way with 12 nominations while Emilia Perez is right behind with 11. Others on the leaderboard include The Brutalist (9), Anora (7), Dune: Part Two (7), and Wicked (7).

I quickly skimmed it and the biggest snub I saw was Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor for the Challengers score. It’s a lock for the Oscar imo.
Glad to see Denis get a director nom, but not hopeful he will get the recognition he deserves from the Academy. Those nominations were delayed a week.

What is the deal with Emilia Perez? Is it a bad movie being propped up by critics?

See for yourself. It’s a musical, mostly in Spanish, about a Mexican trans cartel leader. I feel like it’s an elaborate troll.

It's the best or worst movie based on most folks' personal stance.
I'm not big on cartel movies or musicals, so I doubt I'll be seeing it.

I haven't even heard of these movies.

I think the only fans of this movie are white liberals that love to say Latinx. From what I’ve gathered, Mexicans are calling it racist and trans are calling it transphobic.

Conclave leads the way? I was very disappointed in this film. I love Stanley, but he took me out of it. It looked bad at times. And of course the silly explosion and reveal. It certainly should not be in the design category - they simply replaced an existing set and shot on location in Rome. Maria, a flawed film as well, at least had some real design to it.
Regarding the Academy ..... the only voting right now is for nominations for best picture and your branch. The overall voting opens up for all categories once the nominations are announced.

It has not been loved by critics. It's awards season run here is pretty strange. Obviously, industry groups are responding to it, but no one seems to know anybody who actually liked it.
If it gets a beat picture nomination at the oscars, it will be among the worst 30 or so nominees ever, at least for me.

That BP list is awful. Dune 2 and Wicked should both be in ahead of 4 of those nominees.

I don't know. Anora is one of the most loved films of the year, by critics, industry people, and audiences.

The Brutalist had a limited release I believe. They had it here at the Speed Museum’s theater so I know some folks who saw it and thought it was a quality film. I’ll likely try to see it.
I don’t know anyone who has seen Emilia Perez. And I know some fairly liberal folks who are movie goers. That one is bizarre.

Just left the Vista (Quentin's place) after a long Brutalist viewing that included a 25 minute intermission.
Feels like an epic film from a different era .... ending seemed a bit superfluous and forced to me, but overall best picture nominee material.

I’m going to see The Brutalist this weekend. As of now, my current Best Picture is Anora.

fricking hell... I didn't realize it was 3 1/2 hours..

It's a long one .... but engaging and never really lags.
Anora is high up on my Academy voting for best picture, which is a weighted process. I have it top 5 currently.
