Barristan was in the Kingsguard for awhile before he was named Lord Commander (didn't happen until after Robert's Rebellion). Arthur Dayne is often talked about by everyone from Selmy down to Jaime Lannister in regards to being not just a great fighter but a valiant/true knight. I think they'd be fine.

I also tried to pick members from a good range of Westeros. Never hurts to have some variety for appearances sake if you're ruling 7 kingdoms.

1. Barriston Selmy - Extremely loyal, assuming I have the right to the throne, still skilled with a sword, and plenty of experience advising Kings. Would be a good mentor for my future commander named...

2. Jon Snow - Very intelligent and has no rightful claim to any Lordship. Would be a great Lord Commander once Barriston is gone.

3. Grey Worm - Cares about nothing but loyalty and killing whoever is against me. Sounds perfect to me.

4. Bronn - The guy kept a dwarf safe through plenty of opportunities for death to come knocking. Travelling to the Vale, fighting for Tyrion's freedom, Battle of Green Fork, Battle of Blackwater, etc. Tyrion rose to the occasion (:rimshot:) for some of those, but Bronn kept him safe.

5. Oberyn "The Red Viper" Martell - Grade A badass. Very cunning.

6. Jaime Lannister (assuming two hands) - Despite his loyalness to his family, it doesn't seem like he enjoys taking orders from his father. Assuming I know his reasoning for slaying the Mad King, I'd probably trust him completely.

7. Ser Gregor Clegane - Just muscle. Don't trust him, but a man you want on your side.


If you can't have dead/injured on the list, then replace Jaime and Oberyn with:

5a. Davos Seaworth - would be a great advisor, very "street" smart

6a. Brienne of Tarth - If she can beat Loras in a melee, she's certainly capable of protecting me, even if she possibly has a vagina
