I wouldn’t say quality has dropped, just that there’s more bad stuff put out with more streaming content.

I think this is very true. There are still some incredible shows being made, but with the amount of streaming sites on top of cable tv, there's just so much to wade through. For every incredible show, there are 10 mediocre ones.

That wasn't the case from about 2000 to probably the mid 10's when streaming really started to catch on and things just kind splintered out in all directions with so many shows out there now.

That period that encapsulated The Sopranos to Breaking Bad was something else. You had those two and The Wire, Mad Men, The West Wing, Six Feet Under, Band of Brothers, Deadwood, etc and you had comedies like Arrested Development, The Office, 30 Rock, Parks and Rec. That's a huge part of what's missing now is that network tv's current comedies are garbage. There are a few out there now mostly on cable or streaming, but not like what we had in that time frame from the networks.

And there was something to be said about having to wait a week until you can watch the next one. It allowed some suspense to build and made you really have to wait for your enjoyment and not being able to binge an entire season in a sitting or two.

I've watched exactly ten episodes in total out of all of those shows, 6 of those episodes being the first 6 of season 1 of Friday Night Lights.

Why are you even posting on this board???

All of these shows were great for at least a period of their runs:
The Sopranos
Band of Brothers
The Shield
The Wire
The Office
Deadwood
Lost
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Rome
Mad Men
Breaking Bad
Luther
Homeland
Game of Thrones

Nope. We just left it. I would argue the Golden Era of TV started in the late-90s with the premiere of shows like The Sopranos and The West Wing.

During the period from 1999-2019 you had the following shows premiere that really set the pop culture world on fire:

Very similar to the Golden Age of LSU Football! It started with Saban. Continued with Les and Ed O wrote the last chapter of that three Natty run. Here's to hoping Brian Kelly can keep it going.

Seriously, I agree we just lived through The Golden Age of TV. HBO, AMC, FX, Showtime and Starz were all really big contributors. The networks contributed stuff like The West Wing, 24, Lost, Hannibal and a lot of other great shows Compared to the TV shows we got from these guys, during that 20 year period, there's been a big fall off. Sometime it feels like there's too much crap out there to weed thru it all now, but this board would know about it, and share the good reviews, regardless of how much crap is out there.

FX may be the best source of good TV right now. With one episode left, I'd say Shogun is the best thing we have right now. Fargo wasn't bad, but it isn't as great as it was the first three seasons. I enjoyed Snow, but admit I haven't watched all of it. I've been rewatching stuff like Rescue Me, 24, The Shield, Saving Grace, The Americans on hulu. Fox is a bigger contributor than I remember them being.
