Sam Bottoms was on speed, LSD, and marijuana during the shooting of parts of the movie.

Was voted "Best Picture of the last 25 years" by the Dutch movie magazine 'Skrien' on December 3rd 2002.

Originally scheduled to be shot over a 6 week period, ended up taking over 16 months.

Jack Nicholson was offered the role of Willard but turned it down. Harvey Keitel was then cast as Willard. Two weeks into shooting, director Francis Ford Coppola replaced him with Martin Sheen.

Laurence Fishburne lied about his age (he was 14 at the time) when production began in 1976

The scene at the beginning with Captain Willard alone in his hotel room was completely unscripted. Martin Sheen told the shooting crew to just let the cameras roll. Sheen was actually drunk in the scene and punched the mirror which was real glass. Sheen also began sobbing and tried to attack Francis Ford Coppola. The crew was so disturbed by his actions that they wanted to stop shooting, but Coppola wanted to keep the cameras going.

The movie's line "I love the smell of napalm in the morning." was voted as the #12 best movie quote of all time by the American Film Institute

He was actually 16 at the time, but he did lie about his age to land the role.

Wow. That was pretty impressive for a 16 year old I think. Mr Clean's death, with his mother's voice on the tape recorder, was a powerful moment in the movie.

Good call. I had forgotten exactly how that scene played out.

What about Martin Sheen's nervous breakdown? I didn't he have a heart attack or almost have one while filming?

And I think there was some shite about Brando, too.

It is somewhat overrated. In parts its gets long and slow. You have to commit yourself to really getting into it, watching the whole thing without distractions. Its difficult to enjoy the movie if you don't really slow down and focus on it.

he was all screwed up:
Marlon Brando showed up to the set overweight and Martin Sheen suffered a heart attack. The production was also beset by extreme weather that destroyed several expensive sets. In addition, the release date of the film was delayed several times as Coppola struggled to come up with an ending and to edit the millions of feet of footage that he had shot.

This was interesting too:
Steve McQueen was Coppola's first choice to play Willard but the actor did not accept because he did not want to leave America for 17 weeks.[13] Al Pacino was also offered the role but he too did not want to be away for that long period of time and was afraid of falling ill in the jungle as he had done in the Dominican Republic during the shooting of The Godfather Part II.[13] Jack Nicholson, Robert Redford, and James Caan were approached to play either Kurtz or Willard

This movie is much better to watch after you've read Heart of Darkness. You'll also lose respect for Marlon Brando.

I respect your opinion but you probably didn't understand it.

, you're usually an accurate poster who doesn't post lies or stuff that's not true but you're absolutely wrong.

When production began in April 1976, Fishburne was 14 years old.

Here's a link for his birthday. Add it up, admit you're wrong....it's all good.

Also, I have read that Coppola lost about 100 pounds during the production and editing of the film.

In Fishburne's mind, they're all still there together, on the boat or on the set: his comrades and mentors, taking in hand a raw, gawky 16-year-old kid and passing him the flame.
"For me, this was the moment, the artist-is-born moment," Fishburne says, his eyes glowing in their sockets. "I'm 16, I'm on that boat, and we're making Heart of Darkness."

That's right he turned sixteen while they were filming. He was 14 during production and lied about his age to get an audition.

I SAID, Laurence Fishburne lied about his age (he was 14 at the time) when production began in 1976. which is true. And I proved it.

YOU SAID, He was actually 16 at the time, but he did lie about his age to land the role. which is wrong
