Slevin was marketed really weird. They teased it as a slapstick Josh Hartnett comedy
Did they? What’s weird is I honestly don’t remember any of the marketing for it. I’m not even sure I ever knew what it was when it was in theaters.
And I remember not liking Hartnett’s character the first time I watched it. I was like why is this idiot waltzing around like he doesn’t give a shite about anything. And then at the end I was like oh okay, nevermind.
Yeah, it was marketed weird. I remember the TV spots highlighting the Harnett-is-a-hunk aspect and the comedic aspects of the movie.
It wasn't until a year later when I started learning about Sergio Leone (I was a teenager at the time) and someone told me that Lucky Number Slevin was a modern take on Yojimbo/A Fist Full Of Dollars that I went back and watched Slevin and really enjoyed it.
Edit: To be fair, the movie really leans into the comedic/hip/post-modernistic/Tarantino-esque style. Perhaps somewhat to the movie's detriment because you have a movie that is one half comedic rom-com and one-half A Fistful of Dollars. The people in charge of marketing it are definitely going to aim for the date-night crowd even though the Sergio Leone-fanatic crowd would probably enjoy the movie a little bit more.

Just watched last night - what a great movie.
Writing/Dialogue is incredibly clever.
Plot is great.
Pacing is perfect.
Performances all on point.

Watched it once a few years ago and enjoyed it. I remember nothing about it so I will watch it again soon.
And yeah, it has a terrible unappealing name.

Willis isn't great, but it makes sense as to why.
Why? The plot twist and hidden motivation? I thought he was great and this is in his period of being America's best leading man.

In 2006? I thought he was good in this but that is actually where his career really starts going off the rails and he starts doing B level action movies. Definitely was not the best leading man when this came out

It was the end of his run:
1994: Pulp Fiction, Nobody's Fool
1995: Twelve Monkeys
1996: Last Man Standing
1997: The Fifth Element, The Jackal
1998: squat
1999: Sixth Sense
2000: Unbreakable
2001: Bandits
2002: squat
2003: Tears Of The Sun
2004: squat
2005: Sin City (his best movie)
2006: Lucky Number Slevin
Then nothing that good until Looper in 2012.

He's just very wooden and seems to be reading his lines like a robot throughout the whole thing.
But like I said, in the end it makes sense as to why.
Spoilers.
Because he's an cold-blooded assassin, so he has to have that "robot" slant to him. With him, it's almost all business....almost.
