Another underrated film composer: Alan Silvestri

This guy doesn't seem to get his due diligence even though he has composed some pretty epic movie scores:
Back to the Future
Predator
The Abyss
Forrest Gump
Van Helsing
The Avengers
And those are just a few. He's a pretty damn good composer.

Zimmer usually sucks up all the air in the room.
Silvestri is outstanding and better than Zimmer for classic film scores.
His Captain America Theme is a thing of beauty being a modern composition. It feels like 1945 through and through.

Who says he’s underrated?

Zimmer is Williams successor but yeah Silvestri is a solid First Team All-Pro member in his own right.

Eh? Zimmer doesn't even make traditional film scores with motifs, proper flourishes, etc. He just puts cool noise match movement and action on screen and nothing else. He's a hack. A good hack, but a hack nonetheless.
I should say, that he USED to be more traditional...and still can be - See The Last Samurai and Crimson Tide - but he typically shies away from classic film score composition which takes him FAR away from Williams.

Agreed 100%. Silvestri is much more like Williams than Zimmer is.

It's not a name you hear mentioned a lot by the casual movie goer. Everyone knows who John Williams and Hans Zimmer are. Most people have heard of guys like Jerry Goldsmith and Alexandre Desplat. But I never hear anyone talking about Alan Silvestri. The Academy doesn't seem to talk about him either as he's only been nominated for two Oscars in his career: Best Original Score for Forrest Gump and Best Original Song for The Polar Express.

What about Harry Gregson-Williams?

Personally, I really dig Bernard Hermann.

I completely forgot about his score for Cast Away. That music at the end is heartbreaking.

Yes indeed. Great relationship with Zemeckis (Gump, Future, Cast Away, etc.)
I’m glad Gambit listed Cast Away. It won a Grammy and is Exhibit A for restraint and elegance. It only appears in the last third of the film. Begins when Hanks clears the breakers and looks back upon the island.
Even then, after all that he’s been through, it’s a simple and gorgeous motif. Hanks is the power. Really great stuff.
I made a thread on this wonderful doc for any nerds like me that might have missed it about these composers.

Agreed. He's close to Williams. Less epic, more intimate.
Vertigo, Day the Earth Stoof Still, Psycho, Jason and the Argonauts, Cape Fear, Journey to the Center of the Earth, all incredible scores.

Harry Gregson-Williams?
I like his work. He's in the top tier of working composers.

Zimmer is the BITW right now. Williams had a great 2 probably 3 decade run as the best movie composer in the game, but Williams handed the torch off to Zimmer in the 90s.
If you want to measure dicks on the soundtrack resume between Zimmer and Silvestri, the latter will come up short.

Howard Shore’s LOTR soundtrack is the GOAT.
