I read recently about how Lean got that dessert shot. It was a pretty huge production that included loads of trucks a half a mile away spinning and spinning to create the dust cloud. Then they actually striped the sand with paint to present the track for Sharif to follow and to look like a regularly used path.

They lined up Sharif and then shot him riding an entire quarter mile "out of the sandstorm"

The only thing Lean said he regretted was actually chopping up the ride in the edit to shorten it. He said in hindsight, he should have just left the entire, unedited, much longer shot in there because it turned out to be such a beautiful and famous sequence.

I think they also used like a specially made 450 mm lens to get the shot.

The great thing about Lawrence is that it's a Smithsonian piece because they will never do that again.

Go on location in the desert.
Why will they never do that again? Don't they do that all the time, from Travel shows to cornball action movies?

I don't know what you dump from there, but it seems like The Revenant should be on that list. You could blow up any frame and hang it in your living room.

Revenant sticks out in my mind as well, especially for recent releases.

It's maybe the most visceral movie theater experience I've ever been to, simply because I was in awe of nearly every single shot. I was just stunned at some moments.

In saying that, you could Realistically put 3 or 4 Lubezki films in the hat for consideration (Tree of Life, The New World, Revenant, Children of Men, To the Wonder, etc.)

All of his more recent stuff are paintings.

His Instagram, Chivexp gives you a good understanding of why and how he's so talented. The stills could all be shots from many of his movies, well the ones that aren't promoting some kind of crazy social justice take (but I just ignore those)
