Am I the last person to notice that Roy Hobbs struck out in his last at bat?

1-1 count when lefty comes in. Fouls 1st pitch, then whiffs? Am I missing something?

According to movie mistakes.com, the count was 2-0 when the pitching change happens.
quote:
In Roy Hobbs' last at bat of the movie he takes the 1st pitch for a called strike. The 2nd pitch is called a ball. The Pittsburgh manager then decides to change pitchers with the count at 1-1. The relief pitcher's 1st pitch is fouled into the press box making the count 1 ball and 2 strikes. The 2nd pitch from the relief pitcher is swung on and missed, and should be strike 3. Hobbs stays in the box and hits a long fly ball foul and hits a HR on the next pitch. Roy Hobbs should have struck out.
Correction: Like most umpire calls, the ump's wording of "Ball" on the first pitch isn't obvious until you hear the difference in the first "Strike" call. The count was not 1 and 1 when they brought in the new pitcher, it was 2 and 0.

My captions said strike when I was watching it this morning. I think it's just a goof.

Spoiler
Yup. I think if I remember correctly it is even worse than that. It is implied that he will banned from baseball entirely. Been a long time though

1st pitch high, ball ump has weird gesture but it's clearly a ball
2nd pitch inside, ball ump has weird gesture but it's a ball
2-0 count
Manager asks for time because of it
Manager signals for lefty, pitcher not happy only given up 3 hits
Next pitch, fouled off
2-1 count
Next pitch swing and miss, ump has a different gesture indicating strike
2-2 count
Next pitch foul ball broken bat
2-2 count still
"Go pick me out a winner, Bub."
Next pitch crushed homer
Not sure where you watched it or what subs you have but that's how it went down

The book is about a bazillion times better than the movie.

I don't know what the hell happened because the bitch in front of me stood through half of the at-bat.

The worst mistake is that when Hobbs almost hits the home run and he finds his bat broken...
When he hits the ball, the bat doesn't split...and he holds a perfectly fine bat in his arms as he watches the ball sail foul over the right field wall...
Then they show him jogging back from first base and his bat is on the ground split in two?

Yeah, just watched again and subtitles said "strike". You can clearly hear the announcer say "called strike one". Subtitles then say "strike 1". Hobbs struck out. This is as bad as Colorado getting 5 downs, probably worse.

That was actually earlier in the season.

Watching Major League and Cerrano is carrying the bat with him around the bases
Has anyone ever done that irl? Would be pretty hilarious to see someone celebrate like that as opposed to a bat flip.

I found the book engaging but depressing.
