In a world of 6 billion plus does that 1 alien leave Mel Gibson's family alone if Mel doesn't chop his fingers off?

Can master interstellar space flight.

But...
Travels to a planet where the most abundant element is poisonous to them.
Can’t create a f’n spacesuit!

Who the hell knows?! They never said why the other aliens went away. Maybe that’s what every other alien did too. Maybe not. Terrible story telling. Build up, build up, climax...no resolution. Screw M. Night Shamalyn’s crap story telling.

Every thread this comes up...yes they did. It says in the movie.

Many scifi movies don't give reasons...things just happen.

Some of these are highly regarded.

Pay attention more. Please.

I never understand this argument against the movie.

What if this was the only populated planet within their reach? That would be the simple easy answer to your question.

The bigger argument is interstellar flight but the inability to open or kick in locked/shut doors.

And the answer to that might be the aliens down on our planet could be nothing more than retriever dogs. They might not even be the aliens piloting the ship. They might be trained to go down and grab some food and bring it back up. They might not be smart enough to do much more than grab something to bring back up to the ship.

I don't care what anyone else thinks, for some reason this movie gives me the heebie jeebies when I watch it. I think its the music. And the alien looking into the bedroom window.

It has a fantastic creepy vibe. I think plenty of folks really like the movie and I think most folks who dislike it, mainly dislike it for the last few minutes.

I’ve always liked this movie. It amazes me that people, 20 years later, still haven’t figured out this was not really an alien movie.

Exactly. It is a movie about faith.

And I have argued against this "BUT THE PLANET HAS LOTS OF WATER!!" bullshite too. Of course the planet has lots of water. But it also has lots of areas without much water too (or at least easily avoidable water). There's a shitpile of land on Earth. And sure it rains on Earth, and there is humidity in the air sometimes, but I am sure the aliens knew that already. And like someone else said, just because the aliens are here doesn't mean they are geniuses.

And every single person who bitches about the end, and how everything aligns so perfectly, completely missed the entire point of the movie. Everything aligning is what brings Mel Gibson's character back into his faith. And that is the premise of the movie. It just happens to be set against an alien "invasion."

Great tension throughout the movie and great movie all around.

A plot twist isn't a story.

it's one of the best horror/sci fi movies in terms of production and creepy thoughts infesting your brain. the very end just sucks

you re-cut that movie and simply end it when the lights go off in the basement and it's a horror classic

Someone must have forgotten to tell their marketing team.

By the way, you can't have a movie that has literally has aliens invading earth, and say those aliens were really not the point of the film. Were there subplots and unrelated overarching themes? Sure. But it was an alien movie.

it works well as an alien movie

it works a lot less as a character study about faith and family/redemption

that's the problem with Signs. MNS wanted to make a broader film and sucked at doing that, but was really good at the technical vision of a scifi-horror movie. that's his main problem. he was (he's lost it now) an amazing technical director. he wasn't a great writer and just had one good story that overrated his writing (Sixth Sense)

I'm not going to lie, I dont even remember him getting his fingers chopped off. So I'm going to say yes, bc that kind of stuff hurts. Hopefully that answers your question.

Others already touched on it the real story is a faithless preacher regaining that faith.

The aliens and demons are interchangeable.

The alien that gets it's fingers chopped off is the initial confrontation with his personal demon.

With the help of family and trusting in the greater plan, god saves the family by using his wife as a messenger.

Preachers faith is restored. He knows he'll see her on the other side and God is really helping humanity.

Interstellar space travel? Check.

Can't get out of a locked room? Check.

Worst invasion in the history of the Universe? Also check.

I like to wonder what's going through that aliens head I mean I get a lot of furniture has been piled up. But the leg strength they got is fantastic.

And we see it pacing. So we know it's feeling caged and probably getting close to bored.

It's probably daydreaming about that

Then some guy comes and lobs of his best digits.
