What made Airplane! work so well was that Nielsen, Graves and Stack had been serious actors up to that point. What made is so funny was they all played it straight (albeit, delivering some hilarious lines).

Airplane may be No. 1 best satire/kooky comedy. My tops in this genre would be:

7 Zorro: The Gay Blade
8 Naked Gun
9 Major League

Airplane, Naked Gun, SpaceBalls, Hot Shots are all on the same tier (depending on my mood)
