Hollywood sure does like this movie.

Hollywood sure does love itself ... and therein lies the motivation for four different iterations of this tired-old pathologically egocentric storyline.

And it will not be the last. This script has become an ever evolving shrine unto itself ... a marriage of the music industry with hollywood done every two or three or four decades to show the public how painful and flawed their industries are. A vehicle to illustrate how much they sacrifice and the demons they must overcome in order to excel at their craft and five their public the fix we all crave at the actor's and singer's expense ... or in that rare case of the extremely talented, the man or woman who does both very well - they are extra-burdened, extra-tortured, extra-deep.

Watched the Mason-Garland version as a teenager and suffered through the Kristopherson-Striesand version in graduate school .... I'm not paying for it again. Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga cam pound sand. Both are incredibly talented but too self serving for my tastes .... which probably makes them both perfect for these two specific roles.

I wanna see Cooper crash.

What an awfully cynical world view you must have to actively root for people to fail just because you're bored.

That's her godfather so I doubt she's stopping some of that anytime soon.

I think it's that she's the godmother to his kids. Either way, she loves her some Elton.

Based on the trailer, this looks damn good. I’m a sucker for Gaga though. She is the vocal talent of her generation and does things her own way. She did resort to some bizarre theatrics early on but she seems to have settled in and is now letting her talent speak for her. Glad to see her getting these types of opportunities.

You are right. Whoops! He and Elizabeth Hurley are the godparents of David Beckham's kids.

Never was a big fan of musicals, but La La Land kind of warmed me up to them. This looks like it could be good. Bradley Cooper really is money these days and it's good to see him take on better and better roles.

Gaga is actually pretty decent looking when she isn't dressed up like a tranny. She has some Netflix documentary out called Five Foot Two, with a great topless pool scene worth Googling. Seems like she takes really care of herself and definitely doesn't skip leg day at the gym.

Damn. Does she really look like that?

I think everyone would admit...so uhmm, this is what she really looks like?

It's like when a porn star takes off their make-up and you're like who the frick is this?

Not that she looks bad...(she looks better) but she's always all gobbed up in layer cake.

This is her Sheryl Crow look. Just a musician.

Aside from the first half hour or so, Lala Land is much more movie with a couple song in it than musical.

And I also wouldn't really consider This film, nor the 70s version a musical. Yes, it has a lot of songs in it, but it's far more of a song performance movie than the whole "break out into song" type of shite that I really despise.

BTW, here is the Christopherson/Babs version trailer.... Cooper rally really paid a lot of attetion the vibe that film had with his own.

Hell even the stadium musical scenes are both in Arizona's Sun Devil Stadium I think. I guarantee that's no
coicncidence

Not sure about that. Cooper/Gaga filmed at festivals, they did Coachella when she headlined there a few years ago, and Kris Kristofferson gave them time during his set at Glastonbury last year.

Just how many times can they remake this movie? I mean Judy Garland isn’t around, after all.

It colors these movies when you realize what it takes to be a star in such an industry...music or movies.

She might have been one of the original #metoo.

quote:

Garland, one of the world’s most famous actresses, was groped and harassed repeatedly by Louis B. Mayer, the famed producer and co-founder of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios.

“Everyone knows about the Hollywood casting couches,” Clarke said in an interview with ABC News, “but nobody thought that Judy had been subjected to any sexual pressure from the higher-ups at MGM.”

It started around the time Garland was playing Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz.” She was 16.

…Between the ages of sixteen and twenty, Judy herself was to be approached for sex — and approached again and again. “Don’t think they all didn’t try,” she said.

Top on the list was Mayer himself. Whenever he complimented her on her voice — she sang from the heart, he said — Mayer would invariably place his hand on her left breast to show just where her heart was. “I often thought I was lucky,” observed Judy, “that I didn’t sing with another part of my anatomy.” That scenario, a compliment followed by a grope, was repeated many times until, grown up at last, Judy put a stop to it. “Mr. Mayer, don’t you ever, ever do that again,” she finally had the courage to say. “I just will not stand for it.”

Another executive — Judy did not identify him — summoned her to his office, as he had summoned so many other, more glamorous Metro stars. Eschewing any pretense of small talk, he demanded that she, too, have sex with him. “Yes or no, right now — that was his style,” Judy recalled. When she refused … he began screaming. “Listen you — before you go, I want to tell you something. I’ll ruin you and I can do it. I’ll break you if it’s the last thing I do.”

She abused drugs and alcohol and died in 1969 of an apparent accidental overdose of barbiturates. She was 47 years old.

You can't complain about a remake when no one under 50 has any clue the original existed.

I assumed Lady Gaga was a whack job until I heard her interviewed on Howard Stern. She came across as really down to earth. Count me as a fan.

Who's complaining? Giving the history of the film.

And no one has any clue about Judy Garland's A Star is Born?

It's rated #43 on AFI's greatest films of all-time. It was nominated for 6 Oscars.

And you don't have to be over 50 to rent a DVD or see the 70's version or Garland's version which is considered a classic.

I mean, that's like saying no one under 50 has any clue about Gone With the Wind, Casablanca or Star Wars because they weren't old enough when it was in theaters.

We've had this thing called video for a long long time...and then we got DVDs.

And now there is Netflix...you can actually go there and watch movies that premiered before you were born. It's amazing.
