First off, the freaking director said she did.
Of course she dropped it on purpose. They were filming a movie and she had to drop the ball to sell the fact that Kit flat out trucked her. The scene wouldn't really work with the viewers if she held on to it and the ump was forced to call Kit out.

Wow guys. I didn't know there were actually people out there who thought she didn't drop it on purpose... Of course she intentionally dropped it
I don't have the energy for it and I've done it in like 4 or 5 different threads already over the years, but there is a VERY cold, rational, context based argument supporting the position that she did NOT drop the ball on purpose. There is a leap of faith made by those who assert that she dropped it on purpose. Either position is plausible simply on the basis that the film is a product of fiction, but context and Occam's Razor clearly support the position that the ball was jarred loose without Dottie's willful intent.
This movie, perhaps unwittingly, has provided what could be a telling glimpse into individuals' psychological/ideological dispositions.

I don't have the patience for this right now. I'll catch this argument the next time it comes around.
SO next week then?

I didn't say that. I said it was, mainly, Kit's story. Talented, but raw, triple threat baseball player - caught in the shadow of her big sister.
Naw man.
Together, Dottie and Kit make a complete excellent player. Dottie is superbly talented, clearly the best player in the league. But baseball is just something she's doing to pass the time while her husband is away fighting the war.
Kit has the heart and drive, but average talent. Kit wouldn't have even made the team if not for her sister demanding it.
There in lies, IMHO, the proof that Dottie drops it on purpose. When Kit gets traded, Dottie starts to care a little bit. Then when Betty gets the letter, Dottie remembers why shes there, sobbing in her room until President Whitmore walks in. Ultimately, she makes the decision to come back because that competitive drive is in the back of her mind.
And she proceeds to beat her sister around the field. To prove her point. "I'm better." When Dottie hits the comebacker at her sister, I think she realizes based upon her reaction to watching Kit lose her shite on the mound that Kit will be ruined by this.
As the previous poster said, its not important when she made the decision, its important that she made the decision. Sure she had no way of knowing Kit would be in a position to win. But if Dottie holds on to the ball, Kit will hate her sister forever, and her life will likely be very different. If Dottie drops the ball, Kit is the hero, and Dottie's life is no different aside from her sister not hating her.
Seriously, is there a more polarizing topic than this out there? I'd argue that people are more passionate about this than abortion or gay marriage.
