I'd rather have great dialogue than most anything else in a show & this has it in spades. Loved the first episode.

What a weird thing to focus on, a two second shitting scene.
It was just a wtf moment that caught everyone off guard and added nothing to the show
Now you REALLY get the idea of what a hedge knight is--not exactly glamorous. So it added that.

Because no other knights get the squirts while traveling and miles from a bathroom?

Extremely bizarre and jarring moment. The Lyonel Baratheon scenes were very odd as well as the whore scenes. Doesn’t have the feel and aesthetic of Westeros so far.

A Baratheon that gets shite faced and engages in hedonistic behavior? That's pretty on point for Baratheon's.

Nice straw man but I expect nothing less

What?
It's pretty known in Westeros lore that the House of Baratheon is known for the behavior we saw exhibited by Lyonel in the episode. They drink, they party, they engage in hedonistic behavior. But they're also pretty bad arse warriors but are known for their "mercurial tempers" (direct quote from the Wiki of Ice and Fire page on HoB). Robert Baratheon was a good example of that early on GoT as well.
It's the reason Stannis and the way he carried himself was such a deviation from the line of succession there.
You said it doesn't have the feel and aesthetic of Westeros, except the example you used that you thought was odd really does fit the "feel and aesthetic" as has been fleshed out in the books and shows for that particular character (and his lineage).
In what ways do you think it doesn't accurately portray Lyonel or the House of Baratheon as a whole?

And I didn’t comment on his behavior, you’re creating an argument that doesn’t exist to argue against

Then what’s the issue with his portrayal? What made it odd?

I liked the light hearted tone of the show.
The shitting caught me off guard, but kinda funny looking back on the episode.

The actors delivery and the dialogue was off.

Yea I’m looking forward to the show it just had a couple of strange elements to it that are jarringly different from the Westeros we’ve known so far

There is a whole fantasy around "Knights" and how they are supposed to be and it was supposed to symbolize that a Hedge Knight isn't that

Nope.. A hedge knight is like a knight.. but sadder (yes... I know that line was in the trailers, but I still loved it).
My wife kept saying, "This feels more like the Hobbit than Game of Thrones." I told her she was dumb, but I think this is actually a good thing. I think the keys her are:
1) The coloring of the show isn't nearly as dark as previous series set in Westeros.
2) We are starting in an extremely pastoral setting. I think it's kind of cool to see Dunk start out kind of in the middle of nowhere backwater tournament and the progression.
3) The humor and light heartedness of the characters.
BTW, she was on her phone during the shitting scene, so even without it, she definitely picked up on the difference the show runners were going for... so the shitting was superfluous.

How so?
I’m not trying to argue (I get that you think that). I’m just not seeing the criticism here. I thought Daniel Ings portrayed “The Laughing Storm” pretty well considering how he’s described in lore.

I could see where it would be jarring for someone who hasn’t read the novellas, which are definitely lighter in tone.
It reminds me of Tress of the Emerald Sea compared to other Sanderson works. Still definitely in the universe but not nearly as dark.
ETA: Someone earlier mentioned it feeling the Canterbury Tales of Westeros and that fits too.

He was playing Freddie from The Gentleman basically.
Posted on 1/20/26 at 2:28 pm to Madking
To be fair, Lyonel reads a little like Freddie from the Gentlemen to a degree.
But he showed some more depth than that in his conversation with Dunk I thought. Freddie doesn’t give Dunk the time of day in his pretentiousness.
