Why is it now that more and more movies have stopped using the 555 thing as phone numbers and just say or show real numbers?

I thought the 555 thing was some kind of rule for telephone numbers used in movies

I thought it was to hinder the dumbasses in the theater from calling said number and asking for the character in question.

ie - 867-5309. I'm sure that the requests for Jenny got old really quickly.

I heard on the radio where this is still an actual number and the guy who has it is trying to sell the number on Ebay for thousands of dollars.

There are actual 555 numbers that real people have now. Maybe that has something to do with it?

sometimes they will put a real number and if you call it, you get info about the movie or show

"Fans and curious TV critics who dial Turk's phone number, 916-CALL-TURK, get a taped message from Faison, in character, thanking them for calling and encouraging them to keep watching "Scrubs." "I couldn't come to the phone right now, but you've called Turk," the message says. "And that's a great thing, I'll tell you that much."

The show's cast is having some fun with the number, too. A Zap2it.com staffer called the number Wednesday afternoon, only to hear this live voice on the other end: "You've called Turk, Dr. Kelso speaking." (Flustered by this turn of events, the Zap2it staffer mumbled something about having the wrong number and hung up as Dr. Kelso (Ken Jenkins) chuckled.)

it's been like that for a loooong time. Only a certain range is reserved for fake numbers:

quote:

wiki:

Not all numbers that begin with 555 are fictional—for example, 555-1212 is one of the standard numbers for directory assistance throughout the United States and Canada. In fact, only 555-0100 through 555-0199 are now specifically reserved for fictional use, with the other numbers having been released for actual assignment.

Heck all mentions of phone numbers should be viral adds. Doesn't cost much to keep a line open.

My warranty is fine.
