I wonder if they are using a storyline similar to the Dresden Files story arc about the 30 coins. There, the 30 coins are the 30 pieces of silver paid to Judas and each are inhabited by a demon that can possess the holder of the coin.

It’s been pretty good so far. This and Money Heist (Netflix) are some great foreign shows. I can’t help but notice The musical cues on Spanish shows are like

I haven’t seen Dresden Files but first 2 eps are similar to what you describe other than the coin holder being possessed, that could easily change though.
