Every year my office has an Oscar pool, $5 an entry, winner take all. Last year was my first year and I did pretty well.

I'm gonna post my predictions as I decide which ones to pick here, with a little description on why I think they will win. Also, I'd like to hear what others think.

Below is the ballot, and if you click the link, there's a bigger, printable version.

Best Picture The Artist. Not only is it a great movie getting all the good reviews, it's an unlikely candidate that made a late run like Slumdog Millionaire. I could see the academy picking it as an homage to the olden days of hollywood as well.

Best Director Michel Hazanavicius, The Artist. I'm %99.9999999 sure he will win it and pretty much won't listen to any other reason why not. He already won the Director's Guild best director award this year, and that winner has won the oscar every year dating back to forever.

Best Actor Jean Dujardin, The Artist. I think it's down to him and George Clooney, but call it the Roberto Benigni effect, Dujardin would give a much more entertaining speech and is the eclectic foreigner.

Best Actress Michelle Williams, My Week with Marilyn. She won the Golden Globe I believe, and I'm not impressed with the other big names, that put in good performances but in sub par movies.

Best Supporting Actor Christopher Plummer, Beginners. He's going out of his element, playing a 75 year old gay man that's finally coming out, and I don't think he's ever won an oscar. This is his chance for the academy to finally honor him, and it's a worthy performance.

Best Supporting Actress Octavia Spencer, The Help. I really have no other reason than she's getting the buzz. I think she won the Golden Globe as well.

Best Animated Film Rango. The best movie in a really less than impressive lineup.

Best Foreign Film A Separation, Iran. I'm really going off Ebert's pick to be honest. I haven't seen any others listed. I'd love to hear some thoughts on this one.

Best Original Screenplay Midnight in Paris. It's really the most impressive given the nominees, and most noteworthy, both in the movie and the writer (woody allen).

Best Adapted Screenplay The Descendants. I'm really going off hype here and the lack of a real competitor, although I'm afraid Hugo will give it a run for it's money.

Best Original Song Man or Muppet, from The Muppets. Only two nominees and I think the muppets will get much more love as a storied franchise than Rio. Also, it's a great song and would probably win regardless.

That's all I have for now. These things are really won on the less common categories, which are also the hardest to predict, like doc shorts, short films, animated short, sound mixing, etc.

I want to kick Woody Allen in the teeth. "Hey look! It's a Woody Allen movie, let's give it a Oscar." I've never seen someone put out more crap after crap after crap and get praise for all of it. He's like clockwork, he puts out one crappy movie per year, every year since like 1980. Jesus I hate that dude, possibly more than anybody in Hollywood.

has won an oscar for a grand total of two movies, and not since 1987. Hardly "let's give him an oscar. This is is best received film in a loooong time. He's been putting out pretty bad movies for almost the entire 2000s. He's usually only nominated for writing too, which two of his three wins were in.

Either way, he's got the name recognition, and finally a good movie to go along with it. I think he wins.

which ones? It's nominated for quite a few:

actress
cinematography
film editing
sound editing
sound mixing

I have almost no idea how to pick one movie over another in those last three, especially the last two.
