Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro for Vito Corleone.

Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix for the Joker.

Other actresses and actors have been nominated for playing the same character (Henry V, Nixon, Queen Elizabeth, Henry Higgins, etc.)

John Wayne won for portraying Rooster Cogburn in True Grit
Jeff Bridges was nominated for the same role but did not win

What about characters from A Star is Born? That movie was remade about 187 times, there might be multiple actors nominated for the same character from a couple of those

Frank Langnella and Anthony Hopkins were both nominated for playing Nixon

shite. There's 4 different iterations of that movie. I thought there were only 2

I don't think they count it because all of the iterations have different names, though the Garland and Streisand characters share a first name.

Hailee Steinfeld should have won’t best actress for “‘True Grit’” (2010) imho. Bridges too.
