Anyone else have a kid in wrestling?
My 8yr old started this year and we just had our first tournament.
Went well, he won his first two matches by pin and narrowly lost his third after time.
Then he got his arse thrown around on the last match.
Watching your kid strike out, fumble, or miss a shot on goal is pretty easy. Watching a more experienced wrestler body slam him is pretty tough!

I have two sons 17 months apart. They have been wrestling each other at home for years now

I regretted not doing it in high school especially since our high school won several state championships.
If they continue their interest in grappling in their teens then I'd say jiu jitsu is a great complement or a great judo program

My son just wrapped up 4 years of wrestling for his high school and is currently at LA Tech. They don't have a team but they have a wrestling club and he joined.
He also does BJJ and I am also a BJJ instructor. We get lots of kids that do both and also do tournaments in both. Pretty good crossover between wrestling and BJJ.

First couple years is rough. They're going to be wrestling kids with more experience and are going to get their arse kicked a couple times. Don't let him get discouraged. Eventually it's going to "click" and he'll be doing the arse kicking, if he's talented. I wrestled from 4th grade through senior year of high school.

It really helps develop functional strength
Danny hodge is in his 80's and can still crush an apple with his hand

Make sure you start putting him in ladder matches as early as possible
That way he’ll be a seasoned vet by the time the Kids Money In The Bank match comes around

Yes it does, especially in football.
Wrestling just hit our corner of Houston about 5 years ago. My son was on the first wrestling team at his high school and it was kind of comical since the initial coach had no clue about wrestling. We had a former Olympic wrestler at our martial arts school that would come work with us so I helped some with the kids but still it was kinda like the blind leading the blind since I did not wrestle in tournaments when I was in school. It wasn't until year 2 that the high school hired a football coach that actually wrestled in college and he took the team over. Then it was trying to field more wrestlers to get on the team so the coach basically told all the D-Line and O-Line guys that if they wanted to start the following year, they should think highly of wrestling. It worked and the program has steadily gotten larger. We actually had a kid win state in his weight class last year.
