And Phil takes a moment to explain why he sucks at online poker. And he goes back to talking about online poker after the break.

just wanted to add a few things...i have been recording/watching the entire espn telecast...phil is pretty terrible at commentating poker..his predictions are always off, and he just isnt that good of a hand reader...esp. trying to read the hands of players < 30 yrs old who actually play with a little creativity..
with that being said antonio has been entertaining and impressive all the way...he has shown his handreading ability as well as his own special insight to diff tourney situations..also, oliver busquet did an outstanding job calling the action...the dude is a total monster online, and has been pretty succesful in live poker as well...after listening to his analysis for a few hours, its obv that he is a legit player, and is here to stay...
also, i've played 2-5 at harrahs with ryan l. close to 100 times...he is a total beast...the deeper the stacks/harder the decisions, the harder it is to beat him...so im not suprised in the least bit to see him doing well in a deepstacked tourney like the main event...
good for him...i hope he wins the whole damn thing...weeeeeeee

Are any TDers opening up a tourney tonight?
Posted on 7/18/11 at 10:17 pm to chowds4
@chowds4
I don't play many tournaments. I mostly play cash, but tournaments are something I will get into occasionally just for fun. Listening to Antonio and Oliver's commentary has actually taught me a few things about tournament play that I might have known theoretically but couldn't see where they would apply.
Only thing Phil ever taught me how to do was lose money.

Hate his commentary but he has THE must cashes in WSOP history.

he's no doubt a great tourney player...maybe one of the greatest...but his commentary leaves alot to be desired...i enjoyed his stories and he seems like a nice guy(away from the table), but i wasnt impressed at all with his hand analysis...

That can't be disputed. Of course the caveat to that statement is, he plays in every tourney where there is a chance to win a bracelet. He plays a lot more tourneys than most pros. I know he was a great player and is still a good player. His book really screwed me up when I first started playing. He sucks at explaining the game or teaching the game. That plus his overall attitude towards younger players and his habit of name dropping every semi famous person who might have nodded at him one time at Caesar's is the reason I have a bit of a grudge against him. When he does that crap he reminds me of that geeky kid who did all the basketball team's homework so he would get invited to the parties too.
Maybe he can be great again, but he's going to have to get humble first and I don't think he has it in him.
