there should be an NCAA tournament with a similar framework as every other NCAA tournament

How many teams make the tournament?

Most NCAA tournaments began with only conference champs, no wildcards. I think college football should start that way also.

No, I have a colleague who is a big UT alumn in his 60s. He says that UT wants to be just like Stanford.
To get in to UT these days, top 7%.
None of them care about football enough to donate after graduation.

A&M being in the SEC will hurt them for now as far as getting all the top players in TX. And then you have all the other schools that raid TX for recruits.

Each has limitations.

Currently rivals shows 30 or 40 players worth talking about in.Bama hs.
100+ in Texas.

Bama has to recruit regionally.
Saban owns Wm.

If you have the right coach Texas can steamroll.

Right now, LSU is a feature in Houston like Bama is in.northeast la.

But does that mean they ruled the 70s though? I mean you're contending against a program with McKay/Robinson that was cream of the crop early-70s and was still that in the late-70s with Charles White, Marcus Allen, Ronnie Lott, Anthony Munoz, Paul McDonald, Brad Budde, Dennis Smith, Don Mosebar, Bruce Matthews, Roy Foster, Hoby Brenner, Joey Browner, Jeff Fisher and Keith Van Horne I mean that's basically a literal NFL team right there that team defined the decade it was very obvious

Let's look and see:

Alabama
1970: 6-5-1
1971: 11-1
1972: 10-2
1973: 11-1 (UPI national champions)
1974: 11-1
1975: 11-1
1976: 9-3
1977: 11-1
1978: 11-1 (AP national champions)
1979: 12-0 (AP & UPI national champions)

USC
1970: 6-4-1
1971: 6-4-1
1972: 12-0 (AP & UPI national champions)
1973: 9-2-1
1974: 10-1-1 (UPI national champions)
1975: 8-4
1976: 11-1
1977: 8-4
1978: 12-1 (UPI national champions)
1979: 11-0-1

What's better....having the better record or having the more famous athletes?

Not sure what more I could/should have said to make my point more clear, best cumulative record of a decade doesn't equate to defining a decade/era of college football they're mutually exclusive in this case. Outside of biased Alabama fans, the general public remembers 70s Bama losing the Sam Cunningham game, losing the 1972 Auburn Field Goal game, losing to Notre Dame in the 1974 Sugar Bowl and the Goal-Line Stand against Penn State. Relative to 70s SC, there's the dominance of the 1972 Trojans that arse-raped basically the entire season, the 1974 Trojans with the Anthony Davis game and the late 70s Trojans with Charles White, Ronnie Lott, Marcus Allen, Dennis Smith, Anthony Munoz, Paul McDonald, Bruce Matthews, etc. When you have the iconic teams, wins, and players of a decade, you basically satisfy every element of the argument, can't forget the late great Ricky Bell and Gary Jeter stellar Trojans.

in the 1970's

Bama >>>>>>>USC....... Sorry but AGAIN I lived through it..... You go by books and sht...... Bama played in A tougher league and were just better overall............. The 1972 USC was one of the best teams in history.... 1979 USC was lucky they got out of BR without a loss... They were not that great... So go look at the other seasons besides those two and lets talk ..........
