That Nebraska offense was absurd, but there are many ways to gauge the explosiveness of an offense.
I tend to value yards per play if I had to choose only one metric, and that Nebraska offense averaged 7.16 YPP in 1995. 3 offenses averaged more than that last year, and a few offenses have gone over 7.5 YPP historically.
Additionally, points per game is a flawed metric when you have such a historically dominant defense like Nebraska had in 1995. They had 8 TDs that were attributable to the D/ST, and their defense gave up less than 300 yards per game, despite many blowouts, and only 80 yards per game on the ground. Their defensive yards allowed per play was 4.5 yards, which would have been good enough for 6th in the country this year.

Meh YPP is skewed Nebraska didn't have a single close game so they spent the last 2 or 3 drives of every game with 3rd string in the game running out the clock.
The most amazing thing about 1995 Nebraska is Tommie Frazier didn't take a single sack. That is just insane.

Nebraska's offense wasn't absurd...they just executed perfectly...but you knew what was coming and Miami shut them down most of the night the year before.
Florida had a shite defense...and taking chances on offense got exposed...SEC stunk in the 90's.
5. 1995 Nebraska
4. 2001 Miami
3. 1994 Penn State

Rushing Offense: 274.9 ypg (2nd)
Passing Offense: 237.2 ypg (40th)
Total Offense: 512.1 ypg (3rd)
Scoring Offense: 50.2 ppg (1st)
The Horns scored a school-record 50.2 points per game, set a school record for yards in a season (6,657), total yards per game and total touchdowns (55). This team had four players rush for at least 10 touchdowns and featured a backfield of Jamaal Charles, Romance Taylor, Henry Melton, Selvin Young and Chris Ogbonnaya. The Longhorns destroyed Colorado 70-3 in the Big 12 Championship to set up the showdown with No. 1 USC. 1. 2005 USC Trojans
Rushing Offense: 260.0 ypg (6th)
Passing Offense: 319.8 ypg (5th)
Total Offense: 579.8 ypg (1st)
Scoring Offense: 49.1 ppg (2nd)
They carried a 34-game winning streak into the BCS National Championship game against Texas in what became the first time two Heisman winners ever played in the same backfield. Leinart threw for a title game record 365 yards.
This team had 19 players drafted — three QBs, seven OL, four RBs, three WRs and two TEs — off of the offense and was so deep that Mark Sanchez was the third-string quarterback.
This team was 19 seconds away or two yards away from being the best college football team ever assembled in history - the first 3-time champs."

I hate Nebraska but c'mon....
No one is talking about the year before. They're talking about the year that the Huskers never came within 2 TD's of losing a game in a conf that was stacked. They ran over every single team that they played.
Didn't that '01 Hurricanes offense sputter against Boston College?

I just wished we had at least 1 of Alabamas linebackers in 2011. Hightower, Upshaw, Johnson, and Mosely were all elite that year.

Both Miami and USC had elite run games and elite passing games.
Nebraska did not.
2005 USC had two Heisman Trophy winners in the same backfield...
The only offense in history to produce, a 3,000 yard passer, two 1,000 yard rushers and two 1,000 yard receivers.
Miami also had similar balance but not the crazy degree USC did.
I rate explosive as - so many options, so many ways to beat you - you can't shut us down.
Nebraska executed very well...but they weren't all over the field dynamic in every facet of what an offense can be.

01 Miami is a joke their offense STRUGGLED vs Boston College and Virginia Tech that year.

Miami beat #14 Cuse and #12 Washington by a combined score of 124-7.
Then they kicked the shite out of Nebraska so bad in the first half - they just took a knee in the second half.
Their average margin of victory was 33.2 points per game. 1995 Nebraska's was 38. Not much difference and Nebraska got to play UOP (they don't even play football anymore), Wazzu, Kansas, Iowa State, Mizzou back when they sucked...etc, I could go on...

Let me know when Frazier passes for 3,000 yards - hell even, 1,000 yards...and then we'll have this discussion with the tailbacks of Nebraska vs. LenDale White and Reggie Bush.
Posted on 2/17/16 at 6:27 pm to SlowEasyConfident
Explosive, probably not.
Experienced, efficient and who I'd want this year to have the ball down by 6 in the final minutes. Yes.

Who cares? The offense was literally unstoppable. Frazier was one of the greatest option QB's in the history of the game pitching to either Green or Phillips. I'd put those two up against White and Bush, college or pro.

Nebraska 95 says hello
Posted on 2/17/16 at 11:45 pm to denvertiger
It matters.
Explosive means striking by any means.
Not running down the field. They were one of the best executing offenses but not most explosive. They wore you down...and pounded down the field.
1994 PSU and 2005 USC scored faster than any teams in history.
I understand why 1995 Nebraska gets so much love...but they have become stupidly mythologized. They were one-dimensional...and played tons of cupcakes that padded their stats.

They destroyed 4 teams that finished in the top 10 (no conference title game in the Big 8 and only 1 bowl game back then too).

lol Nebraska played the #1 ranked defense that season, Kansas State. KSU held their running game in check(190 yards on 46 rush attempts) but Tommie Frazier threw for 4 touchdowns and Nebraska won in a blowout
