Sure - long term planning.

i don't believe that many teams are losing money
Do you have any evidence to support your belief that the majority are not (17 of 30)?

the NBA finals had some epic ratings for some games last year
It was the Celtics v. Lakers. Not the Magic v. Phoenix.

Of course.

The NBA's popularity is increasing, and this has been common knowledge by anyone who knows anything about the league, like it or not, for a couple of years. Just look at the ratings -- the Lakers and Celtics are elite teams, there's a once-in-a-lifetime team in Miami, and Chicago and New York have good teams.
I'm sure if the NBA consisted of only the Lakers, Celtics, Heat and NY it would be a very popular successful league.

dude stern has been dropping hints, and it has been written about for at least 2 years

no, and there isn't any unbiased evidence to suggest 17/30 are losing money
dude, NFL owners are claiming they're losing money before the NFL lockout

i don't get your point?
if the NBA can still draw super ratings for a finals game, i don't see how you can claim its dying
the celtics and lakers have played in the finals recently, and the previous rankings never got that high

well there was a 3rd point i was going to make earlier, but i'll make it now
just like with corporate sponsorship at the local level, the NBA has always attempted to create national appeal
this has removed the local fan a great deal, but it allows the miami heat to become popular across the country
it's a double-edged sword. the NBA in general can make more money, but locally, the markets lose support
and if you're not a nationally-recognized team, then you can be in for trouble (see: the spurs)

It's already a very popular and successful league. Those teams being relevant helps it become even more popular and successful. It's no different from baseball when the Yankees, Red Sox and Cubs (not often for the latter) are good. Just look at the World Series ratings with the Rangers and Giants, two teams in top-six markets.
The overall talent level and level of play are far better in the NBA than they were post-Jordan to the mid-2000s. The product is simply better and people notice.

The NBA used to do this but they did away with it because there were to many players entering the NBA when they weren't ready to play against guys bigger and stronger then they were accustomed to in highschool.
I don't ever remember anything like that. Seriously, the one and done rule is harmful to college basketball and the NBA IMO. The baseball draft rule will help big time IMO. You would no the High School to NBA guys like LeBron and Dwight, and likely a D. Rose or Kevin Durant. But then guys who stick around in college make the college game better and those fans will follow them in the NBA.

The league has some hope, the problem is they are banking on the wrong stars.
Who are "the wrong stars" and who would you think are the "correct stars"?
Durant? D. Howard? L. James?

One of the main reasons why the NBA is dying is because of race. Yeah i said it...sad but true! White people in America have NOTHING to relate to when watching the NBA. Yea sure there are some good white players here and there, but come one, the white player in the NBA is almost extinct. The reason why the NBA was huge in the 80's was because of Bird. The NBA has a major problem with white kids not getting a legit chance to shine in the NBA. Do you honestly think Jimmer Fredette will get a chance to shine in the NBA? He'll be forced into some sort of role player like Gordon Heyward. Look at the NFL, some of the biggest stars in the game are White. Listen, in sports, race always plays a role! When the NBA gets another "Bird", watch the popularity rise.

I think it is way more this than the product on the court:
"the owners have allowed salaries to get too high
they've also tried to leech onto corporate sponsorship to support teams locally instead of fans, which affects attendance and the ability of the common fan to attend games"
So much of an NBA team's revenue comes from very high priced seats near the court and suites. Only businesses and the very well-heeled can afford those seats. Throw in an economic downturn - especially in smaller markets and the very hard hit rust belt markets - and you have teams that don't have the cash coming in to pay for 7-figure BACKUP players.
