Its hypocritical to appreciate players like a drew brees for how they conduct themselves off the field and contributions to charity and what not and to not hold it against the ones who act like douches.

people probably did hate the babe fwiw, they are all just dead now.

In Creamer's book he had multiple former teammates and coaches all state emphatically that NO ONE hated Babe. Not even Joe McCarthy (which I find hard to believe since Babe did everything possible to make him hate him).

Even by the end of his career he was getting offers to be a coach, purely for box office draw.

Babe's many sins were often overlooked because he was and is the King of Baseball.

I really enjoy watching LeBron play and don't think he deserves as much hate as he gets on the court. That said, he is an obvious douche off the court along with his boy Maverick Carter. It's like he doesn't even try to have a positive reputation. And don't say he's rich, he doesn't care what you think. Deep down, everyone wants to be liked but I guess if you are surrounded by yes men, you feel liked.

Disagree. I think it was much more a reflection of media culture at that time than his status as "The babe". Players at that time were protected by the media. Not outed by them. Fights, drinking, womaninzing, etc.. were acceptable at the time.

I actually agree with Chad to a certain extent, although if charity work and positive contributions to the community are one end of the spectrum, where does acting like a 15 year old in a club fall? Or "the decision" special? It doesn't seem like enough to warrant the kind of vitriol Lebron receives on here IMHO.

Babe Ruth went all Ron Artest on fans... multiple times. He held out, publicly insulted his team, teammates, managers. He got fat and out of shape. He broke rule after rule after rule. And he's an American Hero!

So the guy's 27 and likes to get drunk as hell and act a fool, so what. I hate the guy but I'm not going to hate him more just because he's doing that.

and you are more than right to call certain hypocrisy out. LBJ is a bitch and a douche... i generally try not to root for those athletes. LBJ is polarizing to the extent that I'll watch him... but only to hope Griffin dunks his nutsack in his face or something.

The guy is 27 and has been idolized his whole life. He's always been number 1 wherever he's been. It's not surprising whatsoever he turned out to be a douche.

I feel the same way as you but if LBJ was on my team I'd probably try to find a way to say he's not so bad etc. etc.

Yeah but that's just whatever. I'd rather the likes of a younger Kobe or a Durant than LBJ.

I understand that point of view but the appreciation of Drew Brees should also be tempered. He seems like a very good guy but he's in danger of being elevated to the level of a real saint (mostly for just not being a douchebag in public).

Tiger Woods is another example. He is what he has always been - a world class athlete who is probably a bit of a SOB and narcissist. The people who elevated him to more than he was and now tear him down for being worse than he is are equally wrong in both cases. We like to see things as black or white but real people live in the grey (if not the blacaucasian)

Do y'all really think it's fair to characterize him as a douche?

I think some of you people are so jealous that no matter what a person in that position does, they will always be labeled a douche,a-hole, etc.

I mean, Brees is great and all, but not EVERY fricking athlete needs to be like him - to be considered a good guy all around.

LeBron has done A LOT for his charities and community, much more than you will ever hear about - do y'all take that into consideration when figuring out his level of douchness?

Drew does it for goodness of his heart.

Lebron does it for the NBA cares cameras.

I need no further evidence than what he has permanently on his back to support the case of him being a douche.
