Probably because there really aren't that many superstar free agents to be had.
It's very hard to land them.
I mean, how many teams in the past 10 years have landed superstar free agents? Very few.

No reason to do 10 years. 1 under the current CBA.
The Mavs supposedly offered 4/75 to Melo, while NYK offered 5/129 or whatever it is.

i guess having the cowboys and all their high school football teams, and the texas mindset, deludes them into thinking they're bigger than they really are.
in other words, the dallas metroplex is perfectly fine, but they're not new york, not l.a., not chicago. they're on the level with houston, atlanta, miami, d.c., boston, philly, denver, seattle, the bay area, etc. the next tier

The Mavs are just a mediocre franchise in large, but boring city.

I'll expand on this. Why do the Heat have who they have? Basketball is #1 among their four teams and the spotlight is on them. Same thing, that spotlight is always on the Lakers. In Big D it's always on the Cowboys. Mavericks no matter how good play second or third fiddle and superstars don't want that. See S E C basketball teams not named Kentucky

Because living in Dallas fricking sucks. I would NEVER want to play in that city. Bunch of fake arse people live there
