Basically then, it was down to Pittsburgh and Dallas.
Between the two, of course Dallas gets the title. It was all about the glamour and glitz and high rollers in Big D. The SMU shite made the reputation grow even more as far as that goes.
But in the 70's, the All-American boy Roger and Tom and his hat. The team had characters. Ed "Too Tall" Jones, "Bullet" Bob Hayes, Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson.
No shite they were "America's Team". The blue collar mentality was still isolated up north for the most part.
The more I think of it, the 90's Cowboys had the same image. Golden Child at qb, not a mysterious coach, but a fiery and passionate one nonetheless. Then you had the crazy mofos like Charles Haley and Michael Irvin.

The cowboys also had a wide geographic reach. Being in Dallas they had fans in Oklahoma, Arkansas, New Mexico, Arizona, and North Louisiana and Lake Charles.

ya they were much more attractive to everyone.
And then when they brought the Razzle Dazzle with Irvin and Prime Time (in the 90s) it was a lot more appealing to average fans. Games were more "fun" to watch.
As opposed to blue collar ground and pound football.

I seriously doubt that had anything to do with anything related to Dallas being America's Team or Dallas being a glamorous major market.

It's like today with the Lakers (Before that the Bulls) and their "fans"

Great franchise with a classy/iconic coach and an All-American Boy at qb. Factor in a trendy stadium and that Texas star...it all makes sense.
Pittsburgh and Oakland are proud franchises, but too blue collar to want that sort of limelight back then and appreciate it. Ditto for Green Bay.
This is ALL true. I loved the cowboys growing up. Its just the White Jerseys at home and the persona that the team had. ITS OLD and wore out now though. AGAIN. The NFL was a shitload different back then. Its when REAL FOOTBALL was played. IMO.

Id bet a thousand dollars that there are more people who consider themselves steelers fans across the country. They are everywhere!

You'd probably be right. And that's probably what helped Dallas get that moniker. They were up against Pittsburgh and considered the underdogs to the Steelers in the 70's and a lot of people hated the Steelers and their dynasty and picked up the Cowboys in places where there was no pro ball or really crap pro ball like the Southeast and the Southwest.

Once the cowboys start winning again, those fans will come out again.
But the Cowboys are the most Valuable Professional Sports Franchise in North America

I disagree with this. The Cowboys were DUBED America's team long before they started playing the Steelers for Titles.

If you look at it the RAIDERS were more popular nation wide than the Steelers were.

The founder of NFL Films was elected to Canton as a contributor. His contribution to the Cowboys came in 1978, when NFL Films dubbed them “America’s Team.” It was a gift that three decades later keeps on giving.

Apparently NFL films offered the Steelers that dubious honor first and they declined.
