Why aren't the Cardinals more likable?

Middle America.
The fans represent the heart of the country, typically the nicest and most down to earth people you can find anywhere.
Long history of really great people from Stan Musial to Bob Gibson to Willie McGee to Adam Wainwright.
Smallish market that usually contends.
How many other fans of any sport routinely cheer for opponents when they do something exceptionally well?
In many ways they're like a mix between the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys of baseball.
History of winning.
Generally clean-cut image -- no Manny Ramirez's ect.
Why has the likes of Deadspin had so much control over people's perception of this organization that should be respected and adored from fans of all teams?

Respected on merit of winning, and adored or 'liked' on merit of friendliness -- Busch stadium cheers when opponents make good plays.

There's plenty of Cards fans in Kentucky and I've yet to meet one who cheers for anyone but themselves. And are super obnoxious about it.

As an Astros fan I have a strong dislike for all NL central teams. Cardinals happen to top that list for me though.
