Why are the Big 10 divisions so unbalanced?

Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, and Michigan State are all in the same division

I know USC and UCLA are joining so they'll probably do what the SEC is going to do and just do away with divisions altogether, but who the hell thought it was a good idea to stack one division this way when they were created?

Purdue is probably going to win the West simply because they didn’t have to play Michigan or Ohio St this year.

Because they wanted divisions that made geographical and historical sense (reasonable) but that meant all their major programs near big population/recruiting centers would be in the same division.

Also they bought a lemon when they acquired Nebraska, who was supposed to help balance out the West. (Even though Legends and Leaders weren’t strictly geographical, Legends was more or less a western division.)

Then they moved Michigan out of the Legends and put them in the East just as they were starting to climb back up, and so they inadvertently made the situation worse.
