For the most part, Louisville prefers to go by UofL and not UL. Plus there are numerous collages that utilize the same abbreviations.

And while we're at it, google 'worst NCAA fan base' and you'll see it's not just UL fans that hate lsu. There are no other universities there with "Louisville" in the name, and it identifies with the city. By this logic, we should call ULL "Lafayette", which 99.9% of Louisiana does anyways.
