Can't let you slide on that one, even if you said it without thinking.

Ruth hit 714 HRs and had a .342 career batting average.

And he had 2.27 career era -- 17th best era of all time. (Did you forget he was an all-star pitcher before he became the Sultan of Swat?)

Yea maybe he didn't have to play against the international players of today, but he was so dominant in his era (he hit 59 homers in 1921 which was more than all but 2 TEAMS hit that year).

If he's not one of the best of all time, then who is?

Late '50s/early '60s. Football "generations are generally 10-15 years, or sometimes 20, depending on how you look at it.

A lot of people see Brown as part of the Starr/Unitas era. Then there's the Steel Curtain/Staubach era. Then the Montana/Elway/Marino years. Followed by the Cowboys/Bills/Favre generation.

I get that, I am talking about the generation of sports writers "experts". most credible sports writers today covered some or even all of thsoe eras. When todays generation of journalists become tomorrows sports writers "experts" I have a feeling names like Brown, Ruth, Tarkenton, Starr, Unitas, Dimaggio will be a distant memory. not necessarily forgotten, just not mentioned with much reverence. This is what I was getting at.

Dude Jim Brown retired in 1965, most "experts" are not over 60, which they would have to be to have covered him.

Ruth, Brown and probably Unitas will be long remembered. The others you are correct and guys like Tomlinson, Brady, Manning unless we wins a couple of more will be in the later group.

This is a trillion times more credible than saying this:

quote:

Babe Ruth is no where close to the greatest Baseball player,

Now you may not agree that Ruth is best ever, you can argue, he played when BB was segregated, lesser competition etc, etc, but to say he no where close to the best, frankly destroys your credibility.

Sanders was a highlight back. He was on something like two or three winning teams in his entire career for a reason, most of it being that he ran backward just as often as forward and his running style quite simply could kill any offense.

He does, however, have the greatest highlight reel of any player.

Brown was a FB who played for like 9 years and still set records that other rbs would struggle to break.

to me it's brown and and it's not even close.

retired at 29, 5.2 ypc, averaged +100 yards / game for his career, 9 x pro-bowler

Barry Sanders

Retired at 30, 5.0 ypc, averaged 100 yards per game for his career, 10 x pro-bowler selection

How is it not close?

Oh yeah he has got great numbers that rank him as one of the greats but when considering less competition, pitching is nothing like then what it is now, minimum home run distance was 250 feet, The batter was given credit for a home run in the last of the ninth inning if the winning run was on base when the ball was hit out of the field. I mean shite man give me a break. The Sultan of swat couldn't homer off of John Rocker.

Those numbers may look great in halls of history but if you think for a second the babe could compete in todays game makes me question your credibility.

This doesn't matter. Look at how much BETTER he was than anyone else during his playing days.

minimum home run distance was 250 feet

And this means what????

The batter was given credit for a home run in the last of the ninth inning if the winning run was on base when the ball was hit out of the field

Same thing happens today.
