I would think guys back then would have more of an incentive to play longer. They still made 7.5x more than the average person, but they didn't make enough to be set for life after a single game check like most starting QBs do now.

Just the opposite; you can get out while you can still walk-- remember, the NFL pension system hasn't always been a thing-- or you can cripple yourself and really put a harm on your post career earning potential by handicapping yourself.
Staying in the game longer is much much more incentivized now. That extra year of being a hanger on at a near NFL minimum is more liable to fix your future, let alone if you still command something above a minimum salary.
