Where does Mark Helfrich rank among CFB HCs?
Posted by paperstreet

22-3 in his two seasons so far.
Top 15? 10?
Or do we need to wait a full four year cycle to fully judge?

You'll get a better answer once the QB leaves and he gets his own roster. Nothing but pure speculation but IMO he won't be anywhere close to Chip.

Was going to add that. I agree.

...but, but, but....he is winning with Chip Kelly's players.

He's already shown that. Chip wouldn't have lost to AZ. He won the games he was supposed to win.
I will say he's improving. Just like Frost. Both have done better this year than last. Helfrich has a very stable coaching staff and seems to be a good recruiter so I doubt he completely falls on his face.

Just like David Shaw, who you can really start evaluating now, check back in a couple of years.

Like the home game against #14 Stanford in '12? Or to #18 USC at home in '11? Both games Oregon was ranked in the top 4 and Chip shite the bed.

You're reaching a bit. Both those teams were more than capable of winning and were good teams. But yeah, they shite the bed.

While Arizona was unranked when they played Oregon this year, I'd say they were "more than capable of winning, and are a good team." Not much difference from USC that year.
But I think you have to give Helfrich a couple of more years before you can evaluate him. Although the defense is playing better from the beginning of the year, he might want to upgrade over Pellum at DC this offseason. I doubt they will, but it could really hurt them over the next few years without Mariota carrying the load.

Eh...SC had better athletes on both lines, especially on D. AZ certainly was capable but I think imo that was a bad loss.

They won't and I don't think they should. It was his first year and he, like the team, improved. He'll be fine. They won't just replace him on a whim. He's part of the stability that has been there for years.

It's hard to say. After last year, i thought helfrich was awful. They have obviously played much better this year, but as many others have noted, lets see how he does without mariota. I will give him credit, the team has improved a lot throughout the season, and in retrospect the arizona loss doesn't look as bad now.
The funny thing regarding the comparison to Shaw is that i knew from the stanford loss to okie state in the fiesta that shaw was a shitty coach, yet people kept pumping him up for the next 2 years. Now after this season everyone sees how he really was just riding the coattails of harbaugh and now all the momentum of the program is gone. Same as larry coker in miami.

I agree that a "wait and see" approach is best, but we shouldn't forget that he found and recruited Mariota. I wasn't sold on him last year, but he's made great calls with playcalling, roster changeups, hiring assistants and more.
