It's actually amazing that this team can compete in spite of those shitheads.

if altidore started we would be 100% better

and if heath pearce never ever ever tried to get in the attack we would be good, hes not THAT bad at actually playing defense

But it would be so much nicer to have a left back that could get into the attack and maybe cross the ball with some accuracy. I really hope Orozco steps up. At the Olympics, he was very impressive going upfield against the Netherlands. He just needs to stop expressing his Mexican side.

No. I was talking about how the U.S. will forget about the soccer team for another 3 years after they don't do so well in the World Cup, they have the potential to get out of the group stage in 2010 but nothing past that in my opinion. And yes, Altidore needs to get more playing time. In 2014, I expect him to be DOMINANT.

Again I disagree. After the WC we will pick up more fans just like we do after every WC, and soccer in the states will continue to grow. It's not on the level of the big four sports (will never be), but I really think it has carved out a solid niche for itself that will continue growing after each WC. In this instance, even bad publicity, or a bad showing, is great news for the USMNT.

just being at that game last night, it was incredible seeing how well we possessed the ball

10 years ago we had no shot at doing that

this team is good enough to compete, with the two exceptions i mentioned

our defense last night was awesome imo. boca was shaky, but everyone knows what he brings to the table

gooch is just a beast

hejduk BOW

just pearce is worthless

We'll see. I can't argue about the rising number of youth playing the sport, so maybe that will help. I do expect soccer to grow greatly over the next 10-15 years or so. I think Altidore can be USA's first real "superstar" in soccer.

Not everyone runs Cross country to be "intense" jackass. I ran it my freshmen year to get in shape for baseball season.

Here's how I see it.

We bomb, Bradley gets fired, and we hire a top-flight European coach. That's a win for U.S. Soccer as a whole, even if the publicity isn't that great.

We do real well, Bradley is retained, more of our players play in Europe, the MLS averages around 20,000 fans per contest (I believe they are at 15,000 right now). That's a win again. Our popularity goes up.

I don't really see a negative, unless we don't make the WC.

I believe football( i refuse to call it "soccer") started being posted about a lot more on here after the 2006 world cup. As I recall there were 3-4 threads every day during the WC and it just kinda stuck anytime there was an important game going on.

A lot of threads get started no because the seasons are winding down and games are more important, plus with the World Cup qualifying starting, international friendlies(always big), and the Champions League; there is a lot of stuff to post about. I think with the world cup it became easier to talk about, especially with people like HH and the like. Personally I don't give a shite if people hate football or like it; all I know is that I'm enchanted by it so I guess to me that's al that matters.

is it indicitive of the sport gaining more popularity in the US as a whole?
The sport is gaining popularity, but I don't know that the national trend makes any difference in the number of posts on this board.

quote:

is the MSB a good enough cross section of sports fans to make that assumption?
I'd say probably not. Just look at the visitors to these forums... many people who post on the Tiger Rant or the SEC Rant don't even venture onto the MSB. It could be said that the MSB doesn't even give a good enough cross section of the sports fans on these forums to determine what most people on here are interested in.

quote:

and after the US bombs the World Cup, is it going to fade away for three more years?
Even if all of the interest in the sport on this board was only focused on the World Cup, we'd have qualifying matches for WC2014 before 2013 so I'd guess no. On the flip side, if we see a showing from the USMNT similar to WC2002, is it safe to assume that interest on this board will skyrocket for the following three years? (I'd say not really, at least in terms of the USMNT, since our biggest international competition is the Gold Cup... at least that gives us a matchup against Mexico to get excited for, though.)

As far as interest in soccer on the MSB, I'd say that you can't gauge total interest based on topics and post count alone. There could be tons of lurkers and semi-lurkers reading the board who are interested in soccer.

When I joined, everyone blasted soccer with only a couple people defending it. There are 10 times more soccer fans now.
