The real answer is that people hate to see their heroes bested. We see this all over the sporting world. From the days when you had to walk uphill both ways to and from school in the snow, people love to exaggerate on how the athlete they grew up with is superior. Now, so many people constantly criticize athletes who are a threat to their hero's level of success, logic and rational reasoning be damned.

Serena has no place being in the top spot of the GOAT list for women's tennis. Very inconsistent and has won only 38 tournaments in her career. Navratilova and Graf are way ahead of her. Also Court and Evert's achievements blows her away even though Serena was probably a better player than both of them. Really, she shouldn't be higher than five on any list.

I'd bet if he was asked off PTI about it he would say something like "I don't watch soccer, I don't know anything about except that Pele was the best player in the world when I was younger"
Everytime they discuss soccer on PTI there are 2 things they say without fail 1) Soccer is not going to be a big 3 sport anytime soon 2) They don't know anything about soccer.

1. Wilbon was a beat writer for the Diplomats for a while i.e. he's probably remotely familiar w/Pele's NASL days
2. There are plenty of old people who speak glowingly about Pele
